Sometimes simple is not so simple

I don't understand why some people don't like the ending of this story: on one level, having Magik use her spiritual powers (and sword) to defeat the Demon Bear is simple and somewhat unsurprising, but it is fitting within the world Claremont is creating, so it should fulfill our expectations in an appropriate way, not seem "too simple." Claremont belies any simplicity by the absence of too many easy endings: yes, Dani is healed pretty much by the Morlock healer, but that's his role and his function. She still has to recover (it's not like Demon Bears are all that real to inflict the injuries in the first place) for a time. That Corsi and Friedlander are permanently changed to Native Americans was a fairly bold choice - not everything just gets magically reversed. I especially appreciated Xavier's musings about Dr. Strange at the end - it's nice that Claremont is willing to acknowledge the shared Marvel Universe without having to make a gigantic franchise-wide crossover about it. Magik's role in the New Mutants is an unsettled (and unsettling) one, especially as she must find some balance between being a dark sorceress and still having magical abilities to heal. The revelation of the Demon Bear's identity might seem a bit simple for others as well, but there isn't anything simple about what Claremont does with it or in his explanation. This changes quite a few things for Dani, especially in her antagonist relationship to the Professor. This was a good ending, somewhat reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (not to go off on a totally random tangent at the end...): the darkness may eclipse the light, but we still have to choose to walk in the light wherever it is.
