    The MTV odditty

This comic maybe more known as the cult MTV show titled The Maxx.  Strange visuals and creepy story, this cartoon was clearly intended for older audiences.  This tone we know from the cartoon is true to the comic.  The 1st trade seems ported over as the first few episodes of the MTV show.

We are introduced to the core characters Julie Winters (Queen of the Outback), The Maxx (The Queens protector), Sarah James (is the everyday girl Sam Keith depicts so well) and Mr. Gone (The bad guy)

The Maxx is a trippy series to read.  Bill Messner-Loebs was recruited by a then young Sam Kieth to write the diologue of the world he was creating. Sam Kieth and Bill Messner-Loebs take us on a trip to the "Outback".  Australia in a way we have never seen it before.  The series until about half way was a working process according to Sam Kieth.  The series is every organic and you can really see the growth within each issue.

The art is as strong now as any of Sam Kieth's current creations.  Bill Messner-Loebs as always been a well respected writer.  This series will remain a classic.  The most interesting part of this series is it was during the Image revolution when guys like Jim Lee and  Todd McFarlane were breaking off the big two to create their own company.  While most image books were tights in flights style stories, The Maxx seemed more like a Vertigo Book.  This Vertigo roots goes back to the fact Sam Kieth helped create Death of the Endless and we see her here in a cameo of issue 4 as a poster.  That nod to his past creation help readers of the time know this series will trip you out like Sandman.

The Maxx is a series I admit will not be for everyone.  But I do suggest that you try book one out.  Never know, you may enjoy it enough to pick up trade number 2.

I gave this book a 4/5 knowing this series is not for everyone.  It is wonderful if you like different and strange.
Tell me what you think of Volume 1, I would love to hear what you have to say.
