    The Marquis is uppity and self-absorbed, yet resourceful.  He's at one's service for a price, which in Door's case, is "a really big favor."

    De Carabas was actually killed by the assassins Vandemar and Croup while in Door's service, but he'd taken measures to ensure his resurrection in the event of such an inconvenience.
