What just happened?
Art: A very playful and bold art style has been chosen for The Manhattan Projects and it is quite an ironic choice taking into account the very serious and significant subject matter of the book. However it works very well. The detailed and gritty line work is complimented with bright and bold colours. It's an odd mix but this is is no ordinary story. The General is the stereotypical bold and towering man with a grenade latched to his collar and a large pistol strapped over his chest. Extravagant and bizarre would be the best adjective to describe the art and I said it ties with the story perfectly.
Plot: The Manhattan Project was America's work and research on the first atomic bomb. Robert Opprenheimer was it's lead scientist. This is what the general public knew and perceived to be the primary goal but beneath this project were secrets and lies of even bigger proportions. A collection of the world's leading minds are brought together to uncover the secrets of the universe.
Verdict: Where do I begin....... I had some sort of concept of what this issue might be before coming into it but after reading it my idea was flushed down the toilet. This is bizarre. This takes the genre "historical fiction" and takes the fiction aspect to the extreme. Johnathan Hickman takes big historical events and people and showers them in his own imaginative and complex madness. Try it for yourselves, as I don't want to give anything away. Despite my rating I'm still not completely sure if this is for me but I'll definitely be picking up the next issue to find out!
