An Occasion of FUN!
If you turn upside down sos you can see the sky, there'll be buzzards wheeling around unsuccessful titles. This ain't one of 'em. Eric Powell wins awards, and the art and writing in this book clearly demonstrate it isn't for his blue ribbon cows. The Zombie Priest's brethren come a-calling and Franky, Goon, and Co. meet them as they enter the city, setting up primary conflict in this story. Meanwhile, there's a new woman in the Goon's life, maybe two. One's a friend, and the other is a gold digging harpy with some nasty-smelling baggage literally on her back. What part will these dames play?
I've always loved Powell's art, which always makes me nostalgic for Steve Rude, Jack Davis, and Mike Ploog all at once, but his writing is underappreciated. Powell isn't just a graphic storyteller, but little ditties like this show that he has truly mastered all avenues of his craft. He's also doing the inks, the colors, the lettering... His covers and writing for Boom's Big Trouble in Little China come with the Neghead seal of approval for a good fun rag, but with The Goon, Powell's firstborn, readers get the total package.
Whether you're a fair-weather fan reluctant to pick this book up or thems other fun rags got you depressed over the state o' comics, pick up Dark Horse Comics' The Goon: Occasion of Revenge at $3.50, barring any slick discount yer comic shoppe might give ya. You won't be disappointed.
