With the help of Nightshade, Captain Atom was able to defeat the Ghost, but in the process of doing so, he was sent to the Quantum Field when Captain Atom's enegy blasts destroyed the technology that Ghost had in his possession. This destroyed his physical body, but his consciousness remained intact as it merged with the Quantum Field, giving him the ability to channel it much like the Captain does, as well as appeared and disappear at will (by traveling through the Quantum Field).
