We’ve been seeing a lot of comic book television shows lately. Sometimes they start out strongly and other times they need to find their footing to establish the world and characters. With The Flash, the show started out on the right foot and maintained a great pace throughout the season.

New shows often have their high and low points. The Flash did a pretty good job balancing the task of introducing us to all the main characters and making us care about them while, at the same time, giving us high speed action and a bunch of villains to keep the heroes busy. There were some episodes where the story felt a little formulaic with a villain-of-the-week scenario. Still, the show managed to keep our attention and come up with ways that the villains wouldn't immediately get defeated by a guy that can move so incredibly fast.

The Blu-ray features great picture and sound, just as you would expect. The visual department for the show has to keep on their toes because of the quality. The surprising thing about the season is how quickly things escalated (no pun intended). It's great going back and re-watching the episodes, knowing where certain events are headed. All in all, it was a pretty strong season.

    Special Features

Behind the Story: The Trickster Returns (8:39) - Behind the scenes look at Episode 17: "Tricksters." Mark Hamill talks about his love of comics and returning to play the villain he played in the original series. John Wesley Shipp also talks about the differences in his Flash and what he went through against Trickster. The new Trickster is grittier.

The Fastest Man Alive! (30:39) - A look at the show and character. Andrew Kreisberg talks about what makes Barry Allen different from the other DC heroes. Parts of Grant Gustin's screen test is shown and they talk about how they felt this was the right Barry Allen for the show.

We also hear from the actors, Geoff Johns, and others. Season 2 will be about what is Barry going to do now that he is a hero. There is also a look at the supporting characters and their importance to Barry with insight from the actors.

Creating the Blur - The VFX of The Flash (26:25) - There's talk of the huge number of effects used in each episode. They need to figure out what will be CG and what will be practical effects. They reference the comics to ensure they create the visuals the show requires. There's some heavy technical moments but this is a fascinating look at all the hard work that goes into the episodes.

Screen Test: The Chemistry of Grant and Emily (4:20) - Greg Berlanti discusses what went into choosing the right actor to play a character with so much history. He points out how Grant Gustin didn't quite have the look or was the right age but he had the heart for the character. They discuss the 'magic' between Emily Bett Rickards (Felicity Smoak) and Grant. They figured if Felicity liked him as Barry, the audience would too.

DC Comics Night at Comic-Con 2014: Presenting Gotham, The Flash, Constantine and Arrow (29:31) - The panel moderated by Geoff Johns from last year's San Diego Comic-Con.

Gag Reel (8:24) - You know what to expect here--goofs and laughter.

There's always the question of whether or not you should commit and buy a season of a show. For some, like me, there's not much choice. With The Flash, it's a really good show and was fun to watch. It does hold up watching episodes over again, especially before the second season begins. The special features are cool and give a lot of behind the scenes information on the cast, the casting process, the characters, the visual effects, and so much more. If you haven't watched the show yet, you're in for a treat and are pretty lucky you get to watch them all at once.

The Flash: The Complete First Season is now in stores. The Blu-ray retails for $60.10 (but you can find it on sale or online for less). The DVD retails fro $59.98 (but almost half that online as well). Is this a must-buy purchase for you?

Outside of some costuming gripes (Many characters just shopping at Target for their superhero duds), and a couple stinker episodes (the one with the bee girl. Ugh) the first season was pretty fantastic. A lot of great humor.

Joe and his relationship with Barry are a highlight, and Cisco really is the thing that most embodies the differences between Flash and Arrow. Cisco is amazing.

Hate to say this, but Arrow Season 3 was a mixed bag.

@the_impersonator: It was, but I still have to buy it. I can't have an incomplete set. I have the first two seasons.
