Avengers Year Two Starts Off Terrible

All the standard problems with the writing of The Avengers are still present in this issue. Scarlet Witch’s hex powers seem to do whatever she wants them to do, except when they miss the target (how is that even possible?) and then they just do whatever.

They continue to be incredibly naïve, falling for simple fake outs and obvious traps. Captain America, of all of them is particularly foolish, falling into a trap set by The Swordsman. Somehow the Avengers, who could all contact each other via communicator last ish, forget all about that and can’t get ahold of Cap, so instead they have to use some gizmo to track him down.

Don Heck’s art just doesn’t seem to be good enough for a flagship title like the Avengers either. His poses look unnatural, and too often the characters look like they’re squinting, perhaps so he doesn’t have to draw eyes.

I appreciate the focus taken off of world threatening menaces for awhile, but this new Avengers has yet to really gel.
