Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 - Insulting to the Readers
Part of CV's Top 100 Spider-Man Universe Stories - reviewed!
Everything about this Annual is insulting. To begin with it claims to be 72 pages - but only 42 are the cover story. The other 30 pages is all filler of one sort or another.
So let's talk about those 42 pages. It's a story about the 'Sinister Six' a group of Spider-Man villains who team up to take out their foe. Trouble is, their plans are silly and needlessly complicated. Here's just some of the reasons why this issue is so bad:
To begin with they kidnap Betty Brant and Aunt May. Aunt May is portrayed as so dingy that she thinks Doctor Octopus is a sweet man having them over to his castle for tea - stupid!
Instead of ganging up on him, the villains choose to each attack Spidey individually- stupid!
There is an endless parade of 'cameos' by other Marvel heroes just so they can plug the regular titles they appear in - seriously, people like Doctor Strange walking by and Thor flying past - stupid!
Spider-Man loses his powers for no good reason and then gets them back a few pages later, also for no good reason except that it was 'psychosomatic' - stupid!
The X-Men's Danger Room has a window through where they happen to see the Human Torch's burning words in the sky and then ignore it- stupid!
In Electro's fight with Spider-Man, Electro just lets Spider-Man wreck the power plant that's supercharging him without trying to stop him - stupid!
In Kraven's fight with Spider-Man, Spider-Man just runs away from Kraven... some hunter - stupid!
The Human Torch shows up and Spider-Man picks a fight with him. When they finally talk, Torch offers to help Spider-Man... and even with Betty and Aunt May in danger, Spider-Man declines his help - stupid!
Spider-Man shows up at the X-Men's Danger Room and is attacked by lifelike X-Men robots created by Mysterio, including a Cyclops robot who has eye beams equally powerful to the real Cyclops! - stupid!
After the Cyclops robot sets the place on fire(?!?) with his eye beams, Spider-Man's next paper clue is burning... so he puts it out with his sticky web goo, peels the web goo off, sees some of the indentations left by the writing on the web goo, and then uses his Spider Sense to decode the message - massively stupid!
J. Jonah Jameson starts talking to spiders - stupid!
In Sandman's fight with Spider-Man he manages to trap himself and Spider-Man in a box together - but does he leave little holes so that he can slip out as sand leaving Spider-Man a prisoner? No that would make too much sense - instead he makes the box airtight and then passes out himself from lack of oxygen while Spider-Man who can hold his breath longer escapes - stupid!
In the Vulture's fight with Spider-Man, he tells Spider-Man to take off his web shooters - and Spider-Man does it!- stupid!
The Vulture then squirts a big tube of oil onto the roof of the building and flaps his wings real fast pushing Spider-Man off the roof with the wind of his flapping - stupid!
And don't think it's just the story that's bad - the art in this issue is really bad too. Here's an example from that Vulture fight. Yes, that's right, the entire top of the building is less wide than the length of one of Spider-Man or the Vulture's arms - stupid!
In Doc Ock's battle with Spider-Man, he puts Spider-Man into a giant fishbowl and then has to put on diving gear to go into it and fight with him - stupid!
The villains are captured and then left in their costumes and all put in one cell together - stupid!
And that's just some of the reasons why this annual is - stupid!
