it all comes down to this
i know g-man has been looking forward to this story for sometime, but hes really busy with SDCC i'm sure. so i figured id do a review myself :)
first off, as a long time spider-man fan, i feel this issue is a pretty big deal. mary jane has always been one of my favorite characters and i was one of the many upset fans after OMD, although i kept reading. everyone has their own opinions about that, so i won't go into it, but let's just say i'm pretty excited, and more over just curious, to see exactly what marvel and quesada have in mind with this story. they've been talking a pretty big game, so do they deliver?
overall, i think so. lets start with the art. i have to admit, its great. amazing even. its such a unique take on a comic, i dont think ive ever seen something like this before. theres scenes that go back and actually reprint sections of ASM annual #21, and rivera takes care of the retcon with his more classic and retro style, and its very well done. quesada does the modern scenes and its pretty awesome. i usually hate when theres more than one artist on an issue, but they pull this off brilliantly. i wont lie, theres some faces with quesada (who i usually love) that dont seem right. mary jane doesnt look pretty enough, and peter looks a little chubby. but its minor. overall, great art on this issue.
as for writing, its pretty good. its slow. i know its a first issue type thing, kind of getting us in the mood and helping us get a feel for what the rest of the story is going to be like, but not a ton happened. it revealed somethings, but overall it seemed slow. no, it didn't drag at all, but when i was done reading i felt like i wanted more. i wanted to hear more story, and not in a cliffhanger sort of way. more in a, "that's it for now? really? alright..." kinda way. also, revealing mary jane's whisper wasnt as climatic as i expected, but i wasn't too upset about that. and i am still excited about this story and seeing where it goes. its going to be neat to see them go back and forth from the past to present and you just know some crazy stuff is going to unfold.
so in a nutshell, pick this up if you like spidey. its not at all new reader friendly (TONS of references to the past), but if you know his story at all and you like any spider-man comics, this is definitely something you want to have.
4.5 outta 5.
