Love and Revenge, the perfect combination!
My review for, The Amazing Spider-Man #4. Black Cat has big plans for getting her revenge on Spider-Man; and Spidey and Silk's relationship starts to blossom. (NEXT ISSUE)
The Good
So, writer Dan Slott did a pretty awesome job on this issue's story! After setting the stage in the last issue, with introducing Silk into Spider-Man's world, things took off like a rocket. (One of those things being a relationship starting to form between Spidey and Silk.) And while that is definitely the topic to talk about one other thing happens in this issue. That other thing would be Black Cat's revenge! So let's talk about that first, before getting to Spidey and Silk, shall we?
Black Cat's revenge is becoming more interesting, than I originally thought...
Anyone that read Superior Spider-Man, knew that Black Cat would come looking for her revenge. It'd only be a matter of time. Well, the time is now! (In the Amazing Spider-Man series.) I was originally skeptical of Black Cat's revenge scheme, because she's always been Spider-Man's on-and-off girlfriend, and I wasn't too sure how she'd be handled when executing her revenge scheme. I'm still a bit skeptical on how it'll all end, but I know from reading this issue that Dan Slott is definitely not afraid of making an enemy out of Black Cat. Taking away her money and reputation really broke Black Cat, and stripped her to bare necessities. Originally she was in it for the thrill, but now she's in it for revenge! I like this new aspect of Black Cat and it gives her a better opportunity to show what she is truly capable of when backed into a corner. With how she's teaming up with Electro and other people Spider-Man humiliated in the past, I'm assuming she might become a crime lord by the end of this story arc! Slott could certainly take it down that path!
Silk and Spidey, are they a thing now?
The ending last issue was a tremendous tease. Spider-Man and Silk a couple, but they just met?Well Spider-hormones work in mysterious ways, as seen throughout this entire issue. Dan Slott is doing something very interesting with Silk and Peter's relationship. I like how their powers are coming into play, and messing with their better judgement, or aiding to their secret desires. (Whichever way you like to cut your cake.) With a new Spider-Man series comes an even better opportunity to give Spider-Man a new girlfriend. It'll be interesting to see what Dan Slott does with this relationship, because at this point, not much is known about Silk. So I'm hoping that Silk and Spider-Man's relationship takes off, because it would be really interesting to see what Spider-Man can teach Silk in being a hero, and Silk teach Spider-Man in tapping deeper into The Other's spider-powers. Plus, the back-and-forth conversation between these two characters is humorous and adds for a lot of questionable moments that strengthen who both, Spider-Man and Silk, are.
The Bad
A problem I had with this issue was, this being an Original Sin tie-in. With Original Sin opening the eyes of our favorite Marvel heroes, most of the tie-in stories are self sustaining and they don't necessarily feel like they came from the idea, or the concept, of Original Sin. Sure, Original Sin is the foundation for all of these tie-ins, but I feel like after the first issue that has the story arc for the tie-in, all ties should be severed from Original Sin. That's sorta how I felt while reading this issue. Yeah, Spider-Man's eyes are open and he's got a new girlfriend, but seriously, anything he's going to be doing in the issues to come will have no effect on the Original Sin series. So what I'm saying is that the first issue of each tie-in to Original Sin should count towards that series, but afterwards, I think the subtitle (Original Sin tie-in) for each second, third, fourth, etc. etc. issue should be dropped entirely. The writers of their respected series can't make the tie-in feel like it'll make some sort of a difference for the main story arc. It's just not a reality!
The Verdict
4 out of 5! With the way that this issue ended, it'd be stupid for you not to comeback looking to see what is going to happen to Spider-Man next! Writer Dan Slott did an outstanding job with this issue, in tying it in with the Original Sin series and ultimately just keeping readers on the edge of their seat. (Mainly me, cause this story was adrenaline filled!) With the help of artist Humberto Ramos, Slott's ideas became a reality. This is the best issue so far; until the next one!
