Thailand is the 50th largest state in the world and the 21st most populous. The capital is Bangkok. About 75% of the population are ethnic Thais, 14% are Chinese and 3% are Malays. Other significant mnorities include the Mons and the Khmers. There are also various minor local tribes and expatriates from Western nations. Thailand has a flourishing tourism industry, partly benefiting from a long period of political stability since 1932. While an ally of the Empire of Japan during World War II, Thailand played only a peripheral role in the conflict.

However political scandals in the early 2000s led to a military coup d'etat in 2007 and political unrest in 2008 and 2009. While the events damaged Thailand's tourism in the short-term, long-term effects remain to be seen. The conflict has brought several social and political matters to the forefront and raised questions on the role of the constitunional monarch in the political scene.

Thailand has land borders with Laos, Burma/Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia. It also has sea borders with Vietnam, Indonesia and India.
