Philip Reardon serving in US Special Forces in Vietnam, until he was honorably discharged, after a grenade fragment hit him between the eyes. Upon his return to civilian life, he become a warehouse guard. On night, thieves knocked him out and planted a bomb, to blow open the warehouse safe. Reardon revived and his vision blurred from injury, mistook the arriving Batman, for one of the thieves and fought with him. He finally recognized the Batman, just before the bomb exploded. The explosion aggravated Riordan Vietnam injury and left him blinded in both eyes permanently. A brilliant doctor named Dr. Engstrom reconnected Riordan's optic nerves to his fingerprints, enabling him to see through them. Blaming Batman for his injury Reordan, now called himself Ten-Eyed Man, unsuccessfully sought revenge on him. Revealed as Arkham inmate in Batman Eternal series.
