Ever since he was in High School, Ted Simmons wanted to give something back to the Community, to help people in their time of need and so he went on to become a police officer.

One night, while trying to stop a man from leaping off a building and committing suicide, Ted was given the powers of Captain Universe and managed to lift the man up with one hand.

Upon returning home to his wife, who was visibly shocked by the change her Husband had undergone, spilled her coffee all over the living room carpet and briefly fainted. Ted explained to her how he obtained the abilities and reminded her of how he always wanted to give back to the Community and that with his new abilities could achieve that goal in ways he never imagined.

While giving Leslie some time to process this new information, Ted went on "patrol" and found two heavily armed men in black masks and body armor attempting to get away with an armored truck full of cash.

One of Ted's fellow officers, a man named Burns, was already on the scene calling for backup while avoiding gunfire when Ted arrived and brought down the first robber by unleashing a powerful burst of energy.

However, Ted quickly began to notice something was wrong with The Uni-Power after he began to actually feel the hailstorm of bullets being fired out of an AK-47 from behind him bounce off of his skin.

Ted attempted to retaliate by firing another burst of energy only to find that he could no longer access The Uni-Power's energy based abilities, but the worst had yet to come.

Seeing that Ted's powers were going haywire, the other robber fired his AK-47 in attempt to kill him, but upon making contact with Ted, the molecular structure of his body allowed the bullets to phase through him and strike Burns down instead.

Having been weakened by the second assault, Ted collapsed onto the ground and desperately began making his way towards Burns' gun, which he had dropped upon dying and shot the second robber in the head before he was given even one chance to kill the backup Burns had called for prior to Ted's arrival.

Ted then crawled over to Burns, calling his name, hoping that he was still alive only to find that Burns was indeed dead.

Thinking that The Uni-Power had given him non-functional superpowers just for "fun", while cradling Burns' corpse in his arms, Ted screamed into the night skies demanding that The Uni-Power take the loaned powers and abilities back.
