The Teachers of the Sorcerers' World first appeared in Legion of Super-Heroes #292, October of 1982, in the storyline "Darkness Transcendent". Writer Paul Levitz and artists Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt were their creators.
Most people of Naltor possess the power to see into the future, and Nura and Mysa Nal (Dream Girl and the White Witch) were the daughters of the High Seer of Naltor. However, Mysa lacked this precognitive ability, causing most other Naltorians to pity her. She struck out on her own and went to the “Sorcerers’ World” of Zerox. Here, Mysa was instructed in the magical arts by five tutors, each possessing skill over fire, water, earth, air, and light. These were the Teachers of the Sorcerers' World.
During her training, Mysa was deceived and cursed by Mordru to become trapped in the form of the evil Hag. She was later freed from this curse with the help of her sister Dream Girl and the Legion of Super-Heroes. Mysa becomes known as the White Witch and continues her studies.
During the "Great Darkness Saga", Dream Girl, now the newly-elected Legion leader, foresees the Servants of Darkness attacking her sister on the Sorcerer's World to gain power for their master, Darkseid. She takes a team of Legionnaires to protect Mysa and thwart the Servants.
The teachers tell the Legionnaires that they are mistaken, that the master cannot broach their defenses, but they are quickly proven wrong. Four servants come bursting out of a space warp in the sky. Two more teams of Legionnaires arrive, but despite all their power, they are ultimately defeated by the Servants. However, the Legion does manage to hold off the attack long enough for the Council of Teachers to perform a ritual that would aid in Darkseid's ultimate defeat. Although two of the Teachers' number die in the effort, the ritual brings them a baby who would play a crucial role in the Legion's victory over the Darkness. The remaining Teachers set about rebuilding their damaged world.
Years later, Mordru once more takes control of the Sorcerers' World and makes the White Witch his prisoner, horribly abusing her until the Legion comes to her rescue.
