    Origin

Born and raised in the Two Rivers, Tam al'Thor was a restless youth, and ran away from home at a young age. He travelled to Illian and joined the army there, joining the shock troops known as the Companions. He rose to the rank of Second Captain during his time with the Companions, and fought in the Whitecloak War and two of the wars between Illian and Tear. He also fought during the Aiel War, and was present at the Blood Snow on Dragonmount, outside the walls of Tar Valon. Following the conclusion of the battle he found a baby lying on the slopes of Dragonmount next to its mother, who had died in childbirth. Tam and his wife Kari adopted the boy and returned to his home in the Two Rivers to raise the child, who they named Rand. Kari died soon after returning home, and Tam refused to remarry, instead raising Rand on his own on a small farm that dealt mainly in wool and tabac.

    Creation

Tam was created by Robert Jordan for his book series The Wheel of Time, making his first appearance in the first book in the series, The Eye of the World. The Eye of the World

Tam and Rand travel into Emond's Field to bring his yearly supply of Apple Brandy to the Winespring Inn. On the way Rand sees a Myrddraal, which Tam fails to see. In the village he is drawn into a Village Council meeting to address recent news about trouble in Ghealdan due to the recently-ended war caused by a False Dragon in that country. Tam advises the establishment of regular patrols of the village more to assuage the fears of the villagers than because he thought there was any particular danger. After the meeting he and Rand return to their farm outside of the village in the Westwood. There, they are attacked in the dead of night by Trollocs, monstrous creatures summoned by members of the Forsaken to hunt down the Dragon Reborn. Tam does his best to protect his son, drawing his sword and attempting to fight the creatures, but is severely wounded. Rand rescues his father and drags him into town while the delirious Tam begins dropping hints that Rand may be adopted. Arriving in the village he is tended to by the village Wisdom, Nynaeve al'Meara, who cannot do anything to help him. He is pulled from the brink of death by Moiraine Damodred, who Heals him using the One Power. The next day he awakes to find that Rand, and some of the other village youths, are leaving the village along with Moiraine and her Warder, al'Lan Mandragoran. He allows Rand to leave, giving him his sword.
