For those of you who don't know the New 52 Swamp Thing series is, sadly, coming to a close. For those who did know, we can all wallow, and then figure out how to fill the gap that this series has left.
About a month ago DC announced it would end it's publication of new Swamp Thing stories despite how well it has been received. Yet as we know sales for the series have not been so great when compared to other titles, and also Charles Soule's departure to work exclusively with Marvel was probably the last nail in the coffin.
Fortunately for us, the readers of this beloved series, DC has allowed Soule to finish his final arc which many fans know he will not disappoint. Ending with issue #40 Soule will tie up any and all lose ends. Hopefully after the end of the series DC may want to revamp it in the coming months or years especially considering just how popular and involved Swampy has been in the New 52 DCU. Ranging from crossovers with Aquaman, to Wonder Woman, and he's currently taking part in the Injustice: Year Three run.
Yet for those who worry that this will be the last we ever see of our favorite muck-encrusted mockery of a man, don't fret, you can still catch him as part of the Justice League Dark, which is currently enjoying some pretty favorable sales numbers and acclaim; and word is they may be releasing a movie based on the JLD (directed and I think scripted by Guillermo del Toro) so that can only boost popularity for dear ol' Alec Holland.
For those of you can't wait issue #38 comes out this Wednesday 1/7/15, and the TPB vol. 5 The Killing Field is already out. Grab it, read it, and if not reread anything else Swamp Thing from the Alan Moore run (my personal favorite), to Brian K. Vaughan's take on Swampy's daughter, to the original Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson run.
So go out an enjoy what you can of Swamp Thing now, he's taking a break is all.
