The Spectre is a supernatural being of near-unlimited might whose mission is to unleash the vengeance of God upon evil men. He is bound to souls of deceased humans, his power and personality varies depending upon the anima he occupies. The Spectre has been bound to many hosts during the modern ages, his most popular and most reoccurring host being that of Jim Corrigan.

After being murdered by the League of Assassins during a performance, circus acrobat Boston Brand was turned into a ghost by the Hindu goddess Rama Kushna. Becoming the superhero Deadman, Boston must aid the people he possesses to avoid eternity in Hell.
Jim Corrigan was a Police Detective murdered by gangsters. Instead of his soul passing through to heaven, he became the latest person to be bonded with The Spectre, God's powerful spirit of vengeance. Though they are bonded, they remain separate entities and often come into conflict with each other.
Botanist Alec Holland became the avatar of the Green, known as the Swamp Thing, following his death in a swamp as a result of a horrific accident. With the ability to control any form of plant life, Swamp Thing uses his powers to protect both the human and the plant worlds.
Abby is the niece of Anton Arcane, former wife of Matthew Cable (now known as Dream's raven Matthew) and was wife of the Swamp Thing and mother of Tefé Holland. In the new 52, she is the still the niece of Anton, but no longer Swamp Thing's wife.
When God sang creation into being, The Word is the first that came into being when God spoke the first word. Now he acts as His executioner, destroying anything and anyone that threatens Him.
The ancient magic of the Ruby of Life enabled John Sargent to control whatever he touched. He also had some magical powers apart from the ruby and constructed the stage magician identity Sargon the Sorcerer to disguise his magical exploits.
He was a big game hunter and chairman of the board of the "Adventurers Club" who had dedicated his life to hunting monsters. He once attempted to hunt the Swamp Thing but died in the encounter, and even briefly served as an elemental for the Parliament of Trees.
Matt Cable was a government officer assigned to protect Alec Holland in Louisiana before he turned into the Swamp Thing. He eventually married Abby Arcane but was later left in a coma when her evil uncle Anton Arcane possessed his body. When his life support was shut off, Matthew died, but was resurrected as the raven companion for Morpheus, King of Dreams.
A traiteur (faith healer), who lives in the town near the swamp that Swamp Thing, Abby, and Tefe live in.

A mysterious entity who leads Swamp Thing to enhance his powers. The Traveller has all the characteristics of Odin: he has only one eye, possesses vast occult knowledge, is accompanied by two ravens and wanders the Earth incognito.

Once a great scientist, Alec Holland died in a remote swamp, where the original Swamp Thing rose from the water with his memories, believing it was Holland. Now, Holland has returned to the world of the living, and has truly become the Swamp Thing, a warrior and protector of swamps around the world.
