In early 1991, Mark Milton is enlisted by the President (George H. W. Bush) to engage Iraqi forces in Kuwait as the front sweeping line preceding Operation Desert Storm. Years later, reporter Jason Scott of The Washington Herald begins to connect the dots between unusual events in Haiti, Mogadishu, Korea, Iraq, and Los Angeles, all cases where vaguely described assets were used to eliminate resistance and reporters were not permitted access. Interviews lead him to the name of "Project Hyperion." A Freedom of Information Act (F.O.I.A.) request turns up documents which are almost completely redacted. A discussion with a deep source leads him to the complete truth about Project Hyperion.
President William J. Clinton authorizes an interview between Mark and Jason Scott to diffuse the risk of a major media scandal, and on the heels of the interview, announces the existence of Mark, with a false All-American origin in a nationally televised press conference.
Jason continues to suspect that an even greater secret lies unearthed, evidenced by reports of an object moving through Atlanta's suburbs at Mach 2.
