not too late to buy and get caught up

We're up to Issue #3 in the Supernatural: Origins series. I'm definitely enjoying it so far as would anyone who is a fan of the show or shows like Buffy and Angel. It's a great way to get your dose of other-worldly evilness.

Since this comic series is a prequel to the show, it's all about John Winchester's history. From the time of Mary's death, John has wanted to find her killer. His first lead is to go after the hellhound who left evidence behind when killing Mary's best friend. The hellhound then kills Mary's relative Jacob who insisted on joining John on the hunt, mostly to prove him wrong and just illustrate there's nothing to hunt so John goes back to being a father to Dean and Sam. Well, too bad for Jacob he didn't make it out alive.

However, John is befriended by a man who simply calls himself Hunter and that's where Issue begins. Hunter takes it upon himself to be John's mentor and trainer in demon hunting. Hunter introduces John and the boys to the others at Harvelle's Roadhouse where another familiar face from the show is introduced. Ellen Harvelle makes her first appearance in Issue 3. It's tie-in's like this that will satisfy fans of the TV show but in all seriousness, if you've never seen the show you will still like this book if demons and the paranormal interest you.

The only thing about the series that I've been a little annoyed at so far has been all the chronological jumping around. On one page you could be in 1991 and the very next page in 1982.

As far as artistic interpretation, the covers and interiors are great. Issue 3 I think is better in showing details. You don't really get a good look at faces until this issue. If you like the artwork from the TV show Heroes, then you'll be happy to see this work as well. The artist for Heroes, Tim Sale actually did the cover for Issue 2 with Dave Stewart whose name is also spreading like wildfire these days. The cover for Issue 3 shows us the type of people and things you'd see inside Harvelle's Roadhouse so you know right away what to expect. Lots of heavy inking carries this entire series. And since it's only up to #3, you can still affordably get caught up which I highly recommend.
