This year will see the release of three animated movies, one Justice's league's and two Batman's. This, while disappointing for those who want Superman is not shocking. For the past few years, there has been annual release of DCAU movies and non of them being Superman's. Long gone are the days when we get one movies for Superman, Batman and even a Green Lantern movie before getting a Justice league movie. For a while now, DC have stuck with Batman, seemingly given up on all the other heroes.

On getting into graphic novels late last year, I sought for the greatest Superman's stories. I found that there aren't so many of them as Batman's and most of them were origin stories; Birthright, Superman for All Seasons, Man of Steel, Secret Origins or elseworld stories; Red Son, Secret Identity, Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow, All Star Superman. I look forward to reading these stories, but I wish there are more great canon Superman stories.

The problem with Superman as well as other DC heroes is insufficiency of great comics to be translated to movie. And the only way to fix this problem is revamping the character by enriching the lore, supporting cast and villains. The company should have done this right with the New 52 but they failed. They tried to fix Superman, Superman was never really the issue, his world was. Batman is largely successful because of a strong supporting cast and intriguing villains, not because he bends the rules and thread the line between heroism and vigilantism. I personally didn't enjoy Batman's comics like Dark Knight Returns, Dark Victory or Long Halloween because, these books in many or all issues didn't feature much of an interesting villain. Batman is only as interesting as the character he interacts with.

There are only a handful of considerable Superman villains. Lex, Parasite, Metallo, Toyman, Zod, Doomsday, Brainiac and Darkseid. More villains need to be revamped from the rogue gallery or even created a new. Most of these villains should reside in metropolis too, rather than some distant planet where every story involves invasion of earth.

Lex is fine but he needs to be more threatening, more than just a criminal mastermind. Parasite, Metallo and Toyman need deeper backstories and more complex motivation. Two face, Scarecrow or the Joker are driven by deeper motivation than mere material gain or revenge. They are out to prove something, and this is why they are interesting. Zod is not a recurring villain and since he is always either dead or stuck in the phantom zone, there is barely anything writers can do with him. Doomsday feels no more than a killing machine and only exist to punch and smash. Brainiac rivalry with Superman need to be more personal and transcend beyond destruction of earth. His powers, capabilities and history need to be deeply explored. Darkseid is fine, but he is more of a villain for Orion of New Genesis. Of all Superman's villains, only Lex, Brainiac and Darkseid are capable of serving as the big bad. The rest always serve as pawns or henchmen.

The supporting cast of Superman is terribly wanting. Lois is underused, Jimmy Olsen is meh. And Martha Kent is mostly irrelevant dead or alive. Superman need more allies and friends in metropolis. Distinct characters with depth and capable of assisting Superman or developing the story.

Lastly, the lore including Krypton, Phantom zone, Fortress of Solitude need to be enriched to create potential for story development.
