Off My Mind: Should Brandon Routh Return as Superman?

Christopher Nolan is set to produce a new Superman movie (tentatively titled Superman: Man Of Steel) for a December 2012 release. The last time we saw Kal-El was in 2006's Superman Returns with Brandon Routh. Routh has confirmed his interest in reprising the role.

I don't know, that's up in the air, and I'm sure we'll find out in the future - I certainly would love to return to my character but it's not within my power.

Would it be a good thing to bring Routh back or should Nolan find a new Man of Steel?

I don't want to get into the problems I had with Superman Returns. I have only seen it the one time when it was released in theaters. From what I remember, Routh did a decent job as Superman. Bringing him back, even if the movie is a reboot, could be an interesting choice. Obviously there would be some concerns if this actually happened.
     == TEASER ==
There was a rumor that Nolan agreed that Routh has the look of Superman and was willing to give him a screentest (as many rumors, this may not be true). Having him return to the role could make things a little easier. There is the obvious concern that casting Routh would lead people to believe that this next movie is a sequel to Superman Returns. This is what will most likely kill any chance Routh has to return as Superman.

I'm sure there are Smallville fans that feel Tom Welling should get the role. There would be similar problems as people might get confused and think the movie is a spin off of the TV show.

My apologies to Mr. Routh but it seems the best solution may be to cast someone new. It will be tricky to find someone that can perform as both Superman and Clark Kent. I always say that these big iconic roles are better filled with someone that isn't extremely recognizable. It could be hard to see some big name actor trying to fill Superman's boots. At the same time, the actor has to be able to...act.

The questions remains, who should play Superman? Would it be better to cast an unknown? If not an unknown, who could wear the cape?

I just read that article couple of hours ago. Routh played his role really good, and sure I wouldn't mind seeing him again as the Man of Steel but that sequel thought sure might do some damage.
And to quote you, "I always say that these big iconic roles are better filled with someone that isn't extremely recognizable" , that was my thought all along by the time the reboot news came around. Also, Tom Welling would better stick to his role on Smallville.

I think he was a good superman. Plus he looks kind of like Christopher Reeves which is also a plus. I don't think Tom Welling should get it. At all. I don't think he is a strong enough actor to pull that off on the big screen

He did the role very well. But as said; this would bring a lot of people the idea that this 'd be a sequel to Superman Returns, which wouldn't go well.

I had no problem with him in the film, but his association with the new movie could cause people to think it will be bad without even watching.

If he is cast hopefully he won’t be spying on families from the bushes outside, or creeping into kids bedrooms this time.

That's because Alex Ross and Frank Quitely are the only artists who understands Superman.  He doesn't need to look built; he's not a body builder.  His super strength has nothing to do with muscle mass--he's an alien.  He has a different physiology.  He could look like Carl from Aqua Teen and he'd still be the strongest man on Earth.

He was fine as Superman, it was his Clark Kent that was lacking. I thought he lacked range until I saw Scott Pilgrim, so it was obviously Direction.

i say no, I read somewhere that i thought said it best, "When you throw in Routh, who eerily plays Christopher Reeve playing Superman playing Clark Kent..."

I dont want someone to play it as Christopher Reeve did. I want someone to put there own interpretation on it. I think thats where they went wrong with the Batman films the first time, they had 3 or 4 different actors playing the same character, seemingly trying to make them all the same and not playing off of their positive attributes. I dont think he is a bad actor, i would just like him to play the part differently or something bc last time just didnt cut it for me.

Like G-Man said, there are some Smallville Fans out there that would like to see Tom Welling play the part and i am definitely in that group. I think he would rise to the challenge and do great at it.

Routh certenly looks the part, so no problem there. But PLEASE!!!! NO LEX LUTHOR. I am tired of supeman getting his but kicked by a normal human, while using for the 100th time kryptonite. especially if supeman could vaporize him from a mile away with his heat vision. Pit superman against someome in his own league. Darside or Zod. Epic Battles is what supeman is all about. If i want a hero he uses his brain to beat his enemies, ill watch batman. And for the next batman, lets pray they dont use the riddler!!!

That is the problem with superhero movies, if you stumble at all you have to reboot the series. Look at Batman and Robin, Spider-Man 3, X-Men the Last Stand. They were all big money maker franchises and now they are avoiding that series of movies.

I also only saw Superman Returns once. They wanted it to be in line with the last Superman series that had ended twenty years ago, which was a huge mistake. When you try to make a movie like someone else would have made it you are going to fail. You need to love it and make it your own for it to be a success.

Final thought, we do NOT need backstory for the movie. We all know where Superman came from. We all now about being found by a farmer and his wife. We all know he grew up different in Smallville. We all know he went to the big city to make it as a reporter. We all know he love Lois Lane. We all know he hates Lex Luthor. Superman is the most well known superhero in the world, his story is so well established that we do not need to be told it again. Pick the movie up
    in medias res.

Imo, Routh was the only good aspect of Superman Returns.

I'd love to see him get a chance to reprise the role, but I don't think it's feasible without the movie looking like a direct sequel to Singer's garbage.

Sign me up for a petition to see Routh return as Superman!

As someone mentioned earlier, I also felt the direction lacked for Superman Returns. For me he has the look and doesn't need to be musclebound, otherwise they'd end up casting a wrestler into that role.

As for the story, I'd like to see a powerhouse villain take him on. First choice would perhaps be Brainiac. Manipulating Earth's technology and turning the humans against Superman. Second choice would be Doomsday, however they would have to include his death and rebirth, which would mean multiple movies. Third choice would be Darkseid. An apocalyptic movie where he attempts to enslave humanity, but this would mean we'd have to introduce other heroes into the film. If it's a world crisis, it'll be daft that Superman will be on his own.

He wasn't too bad as superman, but I don't really think he "got-it" as clark kent. If you go back and watch the original superman movies, Chris Reeve was a completely different character as Clark Kent. He slouched, was clumsy,  and a bit of a shy violet.

Yes, he's not a body builder, but he is a farmer or at least a former farmer.  I want my Superman to look burly, like Welling. Of course I don't think Welling is suited for the role at all. Neither is Routh. I didn't care for his Superman. I can't vouch for his acting ability, but  Jon Hamm from Mad Men looks more like Superman to me.

routh doesnt look like superman and he isnt buff at all. Superman's huge. Routh inda looks like a wimp. Personally i would like tom welling cuz tom looks just like supes if he changed his hair, and tom is built, and would probably get even more built training for the movie. but, like gman said, people might think its a spinoff, and i dont see nolan casting  a tv show drama actor like welling.

The actor who plays Superman needs to be someone who can nail both the Clark Kent and Superman personas. Christopher Reeve did that perfectly in the old Superman films and if Routh can do that, then I'd be fine with him being Superman. If not, find someone else. Also more action in this next film please!

@high_savage:  I agree to some degree.  I'd be fine if it was Routh.  I don't think I'd mind if it was the dude from Smallville either, he just better be directed a little better since everyone on the W.B. seems to to over-act a little.  I really don't know how feel regarding this.  After watching so many STAS I don't picture Clark as being all goofy anymore like the original movies.

Maybe Sean Faris, but he is young and needs little more muscle.

First, this will be no Superman Returns as Nolan is in Charge...
Second, I think this is going to be a reboot like Batman Begins, he will not deal with other peoples issues.
Third, Routh did well, but Nolan likes edgier actors. He will look for someone in the mold of Leonardo DiCaprio or Bale. He likes to also stick to actors he knows.

I actually think DiCaprio could play the role, but that would not be the fanboy choice. You should look at all the people that have been in his movies and see if any would fit, promise you that they have been in his movies before. If he has the helm of both I would think that after 3 Dark Knights and 3 Supermans you could see the too come together.

Superman Returns flat stunk! A stalking Superman, who is tricked into flying into space, comes back and finds out he had a kid with lane that has super powers???? It was just flat awful. To think Cyclops had to die for this! I digress, you can not go straight to Doomsday, I think you will see a lesser known villain (like Begins) and eluding to Lex, Lex and Brainiac, and then Doomsday. The villains will be grounded in reality and dark, which is good as it would be nice to see a truly diabolical Lex working with Brainiac unknowingly to bring on the doomsday!
