The origin stories, Superman Birthright by Mark Waid, and Superman Secret Origin by Geoff Johns with art by Gary Frank are always a good place to start. Also Superman Up, Up and Away! by Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns, follows on directly from the Infinite Crisis story arc, thats probably when Superman's modern era begins.   :)

Definitely, Superman: Secret Origin.  I'm a big fan of the Death of Superman story and subsequent Funeral for a Friend and Reign of the Supermen.

Secret Origin is his current official origin, but Birthright is a WAY better origin, shame it was retconned.
