Superman
Character » Superman appears in 18939 issues.
Sent to Earth as an infant from the dying planet Krypton, Kal-El was adopted by the loving Kent family and raised in America's heartland as Clark Kent. Using his immense solar-fueled powers, he became Superman to defend mankind against all manner of threats while championing truth, justice, and the American way!
How long would it take Superman to clean up Gotham?
He really cant really clean up Gotham. No matter how fast you put them in jail. Guys like the joker can break out anytime they want. But Gotham diffently would be safer
The normal boring criminals would be off the strret in the day but Batman's most intelligent Rouges would give the man of steel at least a week of headaches. It would be cool to see Arkham with alien tech though
The problem with Gotham isn't the crime, it's the people. They're scared into corruption, the victims then in turn victimize other people. Superman can't fix that in a year.
I don't see Superman cleaning it up, sure he could get rid of the flashier super criminals for a while. But Gotham is such a thriving economy for crime, that power vacuum would quickly fill. Sure the gangs may not directly war in the streets but it would still be there.
Now if you don't believe it, just check the thread for an rough estimate of organized crime in Gotham.

Probably about a week, depending on which cleaning supplies he uses and if anyone gets in his way...
The streets wouldn't take long at all to clean. It's the inmates in that damn asylum that's the variable. After Supes cleans out the scum on the street in an hour or so, he should make it his first priority to secure the asylum to prevent any of the inmates from escaping. Get that Kryptonian technology to work!
Aside from the fact that he actually dislikes being in Gotham for any considerable time (by his own admission) he could physically fly around and collar every single criminal on the street in seconds sure... BUT!
Gothams problem is deeper than that, it's a psychological problem... he'd have to stay in Gotham every second of every day and he still couldn't cure it's "sickness".
Gotham as a city, as an entity is cursed (some would say literally), it's a deep ingrained darkness that people like Joker and Harvey Dent and all the rest are merely manifestations of.
Gotham is insane and Superman ain't no shrink.
It takes somebody who understands this intangible darkness that permeates the city to fight it, somebody who understands the city, who has seen first hand how Gotham can rip away your soul and devour everything you hold dear.
Gothams problems are not some muggers, a few pimps, not even super criminals... Gothams problem... is Gotham itself.
No amount of superspeed or heat vision is going to help.
No one can clean up Gotham permantely. No hero can permantently clean up their city, the villians always come back, you can't stop them!
to much detective work for superman. He couldnt handle dealing with real killer psychos as compared to his regular villians, bizarro and metallo
I recently reread No Mans Land... it pretty much answers this question.
All the superpowers in the world can't fix what's wrong with Gotham.
he cant clean his own city where things are done in the open he cant fair better with places where its done in secret and sometimes without tons of evidence even if they are caught nothing happens to them.supes has a city with clean people in the law with a few crooked individuals turn it around with gotham.
He wouldn't clean Gotham up. On the contrary, he would likely be killed after the word got around that the Man of Steel was trying to clean up Gotham and Batman's criminals start lacing all of their weapons with kryptonite.
He hates being in Gotham for a reason: he knows that Batman's villains actually have a good chance of one shotting him.
It depends on the jail he puts the bad guys in.
does he have his own jail , get the corruption out of the offices of the police and the mayors place?
Can he truly protect a people that have nobody to trust because the crime lords have hands in all pockets.
He could lean it all up I say if he used all his powers.
In a month.
That is breaking his morel code , ease dropping and a bunch of other things.
Gotham would be crime free in a year for sure.
He would not only fight crime but put into effect housing for the poor , food banks ran by those very same people and put in place a structure that would keep them employed and doing well.
Would it stay cleaned up hmmmmm.
It depends on the souls in the city.
Would they see Superman as a hero just trying to make the world a better place.
Or would they see him as a threat to a way of life, that way of life be , Drugs , Prostitution and gambling. Murder , and the list goes on and on and on.
Clean up Gotham might imply that Superman would have to go above human laws.
He could easily build a prison off world on some large asteroid, in our solar system, with self-sustain systems and no way off the rock. He then could use his power to its full extent to find and imprison all criminals in Gotham. Which afterwards he would take them all to the asteroid and leave them there.
Of course such action would bring about larger issues. Because authorities worldwide would then start to fear that Superman might decide one day to dispose of anyone he very well pleases. And of course Batman would never go along with it. So doing such a thing would most likely create a rift between the two.
Now if it was to simply put them all back at Arkham, he could easily do it in a few hours. But seeing they're always escaping, it would pretty much be a waste of time.
Superman has in him the power to find anyone in the planet, writers simply make it so that for some convenient reason he doesn't do it.
I wonder how the Punisher would do in Gotham?
Odd how the difference between Marvel and Dc is so vast. When you get a story line for marvel the ending is always bleak and the hero almost always fails to save the city or planet. Look at The Hulk and Mastro line or Thor story arc.
If you know of Superman he in most cases leads by example and not only saves the world but it ends up a brighter better place and the people are able to go on and explore the universe.
I like the side of Dc where the hero never forgets he is a hero and I really do not understand the side of Marvel that if you look really close some of the good guys could be mistaken for bad guys.
Not blatant ones like Punisher or Wolverine because they kill but other ones like the mutants and the ever present mutant war. The hulk has not done anything crazy of late but he was prime suspect for bad guy when he used to destroy most the town screaming leave me alone. Never getting away from the military that hounded him and not simply just putting a stop to General Ross because of the connection to Betty and his wife. Its like a get out of pain free card because it would effect my wife in a bad way.
I mean Superman could indeed save the city just by being himself. He would simply inspire the many to step up and save themselves and is this not what a hero does and specifically , what Superman does and how he shines as a hero.
Can superman save the city , Like the angel that visited Salem and Gomorrah and said find 10 good souls. Could he find 10 good souls and change them and the chain reaction start and 10 become 100 and so on and so on.
You can only do so much but the people have got to be willing to help.
I say he could and one reason he could and Batman will always fail.
Batman fights the dark with the dark , he waits for a true leader to show up and bring light to a dark world.
Batman does not know what that light is or what it looks like because he does not hold it within himself.
However he has hope to see it one day and this is what keeps him going , keeps him strong and makes him the hero he is.
He likes Superman because he just is not effected by the darkness around him and Superman likes Batman because he has the will power to never give up and does it with no powers just the desire to keep those safe around him.
