It's not so much that he died, but that Nekron believed that he cheated death. The Flash didn't die either, he "become one with the Speed Force."

Can Baal die? Can Indra die? Depends on what you call Death. The answer is that the Sun/Sky god will be defeated by the Chaos Monster (Doomsday in this case), but rise to life, put the SOB down (though in the Superman version of the story they die together) and come back smelling like roses and glowing like sunshine.

Superman is just another version of the indo-European 2nd generation chief god - Zeus, JHWH, take your pick. These guys can 'die', but they don't stay dead because they represent the fertility and renewing of the soil each year and the king standing as a defender against the hordes of darkness.

    Great answer! Well said!

In continuity, this is basically what happened. Superman did die in his fight against Doomsday. However, the robots of his Fortress of Solitude got to his body in time and put it in that solar matrix chamber. This miraculously revived the Man of Steel even though he had been technically dead for a while. In short and cynical, he actually died but he hadn't been dead long enough for his revival through Kryptonian science to be impossible. That's why Nekron was able to make him a Black Lantern.

No, he cannot die permanently. The writers would never allow it.

Continuity was retroactively changed. The Speed Force is now kind of like Nirvana, he became one with it and lost his own personal consciousness.
