Superman is my favorite super hero. I started comics reading his books and even when I couldn't read the books I still bought them. So low and behold when I got back into collecting the first books I picked up was the Action Comics Superman and the Legion arc. I was hooked on Johns' Superman. Then it all ended and changed Superman was on New Krypton and out of his books. Drop them or give the books a chance and see what could come out of it? I stayed. I fell in love with what I call the neo-Superman family. All of the stories over the last year culminated with Superman: War of the Supermen. Where would this all lead? Well the first 3 issues we've seen the dist ruction of New Krypton and the vast majority of Kryptonians with it. We' ve been pulled in two different directions. One that wanted to cheer on the Kryptonians and the other that wanted their defeat. Great writing by Robinson and Gates there! Artist that did a fantastic to serviceable job on those three issues.
Well here we are at the final issue of the 100 minute war.
The story gets its end Zod and Superman have their showdown. We find out more about the final fate of Chris and Thara. General Lane makes his last stand. And the easy button is pressed and all is back to where it began. Superman is the great protector of Earth. The writing is as good as the first 3 issues but I was not completely happy with the ending. Why? Dear reader you ask. well it is because I don't like the final fate of Chris, Thara, Jim Harper, and Mon-el. I wont' tell you what happens but I think you can figure it out. It was done well but not what I wanted.
The art is handled by Barrows, Cafu, and Panisica. I love Barrows' work and look forward to seeing more of it in Superman with JMS. Cafu is simply amazing. Panisica is serviceable but not distracting so he'll get a pass from me in this issue.
3.5 overall. Goodbye to all those who have departed. You will be missed. This story still gets a recommendation from me.
