This movie was a big disappointment for me.  I am a huge fan of Bruce Timm and when this DVD came out I thought it was going to be great.  I literally believed that Timm was incapable of making a bad superhero cartoon.

I didn't care much for the original story of Doomsday because it was so forced.  The plot points in the original story were continually convenient enough to make the story work.  This built up to the climax of Superman figuring out that the projectiles on Doomsday's body were extensions of his skeleton and thus being able to defeat him.

    Let's bilk the Cure Nahaha
    Let's bilk the Cure Nahaha
I thought the whole thing could have been done a lot better than it was.  I did not expect it to be worse than the original story.  It all started with Lex having the cure for cancer and withholding it to benefit his own company.  Not that Luthor wouldn't do that but it came off as way too much like Lex was Dick Dastardly instead of Lex Luthor.  This was accentuated by Superman desperately trying to find the cure for the same disease at the same time.  The whole thing makes you roll your eyes.  I felt like the fact the Lex was evil and Superman was god was being pounded in my brain with a tack hammer.

     No one can stop him.
     No one can stop him.
It was also disappointing to see Doomsday not fighting any other heroes.  Part of what made Doomsday the monster he is was due to no one but Superman being able to defeat him.  Sure it was not done real well in the first place but at least the point was made.

The biggest problem of this episode came when Luthor has Mercy Graves cover up his inadvertently releasing Doomsday in the first place.  In order to cover up the incident Lex has Mercy tie up loose ends.  This would not be uncommon for Lex but very far fetched in this particular situation.  The reason for this is the amount of people involved would mean a lot of deaths.  So, many as to make the cover up a far bigger crime than the original crime and instead of covering up the crime it would most likely put a magnifying glass on it.

The final disgrace of this is the death of Mercy.  Mercy is Lex's right hand and has been doing his dirty work since the first conception of the character.  She has cleaned up much worse crimes than this and Lex just shoots her in the head in his own office of all places.

     No Mercy
     No Mercy
This is really annoying due to it's complete lack in logic.  Lex would not shoot Mercy because she is too valuable a resource.  He really wouldn't kill her in his own office for the reason he does. Think for one second.  Lex kills her to cover up her killing other people.  In other-words he is following the first rule of assassination "kill the assassin".  The problem is the why, where and how.

The Why:  Why kill a valuable resource like Mercy.  She has done things like this before and knows many of his secrets why kill her this time?  In the line of work Lex does he needs someone like Mercy to cover up his crimes and keep his hands clean.  Now he has to find another person to take her place.  This has to be a smart and loyal person and they are going to be hard to come by considering they will wonder what happened to the last one.

     What you got there Lex?
     What you got there Lex?
The where and how:  The where and how are by a gun in his own office.  If he is trying to cover up the crime why do it in his own office with a gun.  He just spread the woman's brains and blood all over the office.  Who is going to clean up the mess?  Lex?  What about CSI?  Also what is Lex going to do with the people who clean up the mess.  Lex is too smart to make a bigger and bigger mess.  This makes Lex look like a big idiot in a white turtleneck.

Over all in the whole movie the bad guys are just over the top evil and the good guys are over the top good.  You are left shaking your head.  Not only that there is a lot of scenes made to shock the viewers scenes.  For example superman fetuses being destroyed and a pedophile like super-villain.  The whole thing is more for shock than plot.

I only gave this film half-a-star and it was hard to do so because I like Timm's work so much.  I also hate making a reviews too negative.  All that said I was not biased at all being such a fan.  The art was also bizarre as Superman had this gaunt look in his face and Lex looked like a sixty's James Bond villain.  I would not recommend this movie to anyone not even kids.  The only fans who would like this would be the ones who like violence over good story telling and could care less about a solid plot with a good narrative.

The GoodLex, some great Lex moments here. I loved the shooting Mercy in the head, some may hate it but this is a one time story I see this as a truly Lex thing to do. He would kill anyone especially if they interfered with his ego. I saw a previous review pointing out Mercy's long-time association with Lex and I see his point but really...Lex...loyalty...attachment? Not his style the only reason Mercy hasn't been killed in the past is because of continuity and fan's liking the character. Other L...
