Man Of Steel Returns
Superman returns to action but citizens aren't sure if he's the real Superman. Even doubt runs through the superhero community. Superman does what is necessary to gain back their trust.
My Thoughts:This is a three issue story arc chronicling the return of Superman after being out of action for a year. It's written by Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza. I like the concept they delivered, having doubt and uncertainty overcome not only the citizens of the country, but also a large portion of the superhero community. With Superman being out of action for a whole year it only makes sense that people who doubt whether or not he is truly the genuine Superman.
I wasn't thrilled with the choice of villain for this story. I've never heard of The Auctioneer but his character seemed kind of lame. He captures super-powered people to auction them off. Thankfully the rest of the story was well written and the dialogue between other characters was refreshing enough that I didn't lose interest in the comic.
Probably the best thing about this story after the fact that Superman is back in action, is the two cliffhangers the writers leave. I'm very curious to find the answers out to both of those questions. They were well written into the story adding that heightened sense of curiosity and excitement the comic gravely needed after having a poor choice of a villain in it.
The art is by Pete Woods who does a great job. My only problem with the art would be the way Lois Lane is drawn. I just don't like her with the short hair. Not a big deal really, I'm just used to her hair being longer. A couple times certain characters faces like Aquaman looked a little funny. Other than that the art is pretty solid. I love the coloring and the lettering in the comic. The covers were very unique and interesting. I thought it was a nice touch to this story arc.
If you're a big Superman fan and keep up with everything relating to his character than you'll definitely want to read this. If you're not into DC Comics a lot then you may be slightly lost jumping into this if you haven't been keeping up with their story arcs. It's a quick fun read that sets up for a bigger (hopefully awesome) Superman story arc to come.
