Too Many Cameos
First comic in the Superman series written by Scott Lobdell and it's not a bad start. I wasn't however amazed by the overall art and the main art in particular. It just looks a bit stiff in bits.
This comic sees the return of Helspont and gives background on his past. We see Clark adjusting to his life now that he has Jimmy Olsen as a roommate. On his way to the Daily Planet he notices a huge space ship and notices Helspont who he realises has spotted him also. Now as Superman he goes to confront Helspont who is prepared for him this time. John Jones (Martian Manhunter) notices the ship and is confronted by Salu who is a Daemonite like Helspont. The two battle wit Salu apparently getting the better. Superman still after Helspont is confronted by Grifter who has recently been in battle with Helspont also. The two fight together against Biomass. Another Daemonite called Quom confronts Starfire and asks he to recall the thirteen. When she does saying it's a fairy tale Quom tells her it is far from and this is the only reason she lives. Hawkman is also confronted by a Daemonite called Lord Defile who apparently wants Hawkman to help them. The final battle between Superman and Helspont commences and when it is finished Helspont sees similarities in them and tells him this isn't the end.
This has been a good start to what hopefully will be a good run by Lobdell who has done good work on Teen Titans, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and Superboy over the last year. It has some amazing battles but the main thing that stops this from getting a higher rating is that there are too many cameos in a small space and the story isn't explained as well cause of this. It does however show that this is most likely not something that will be swept under the rug and will come back sooner or later and might also like in this issue affect more of the DC Universe than just Superman.
Final verdict. I recommend this even though it's by far not the best comic out this week, it does show a lot of promise for the future of the series.
