The Good

This series continues to be a mix of some familiarity along with a whole heap of the unknown. As we sit back and enjoy Doc Ock's tenure as Spider-Man (come on, we all know this won't be forever, right?), we're seeing Spider-Man in a way we haven't seen him before. Under Otto's guidance, this Spider-Man is determined to live up to the "superior" moniker he's been throwing about. That means he's taking things to a more...extreme level when it comes to dealing with his foes.

Currently on his target is Hobgoblin. More specifically, Phil Urich. Urich believed he killed the original Hobgoblin (he didn't) but now is forced to pay tribute to the original in order to keep using the identity. As Phil, hungry to gain infamy as Hobgoblin and fortune at the Daily Bugle by getting exclusive scoops on Hobgoblin's activities (sound familiar?). Unfortunately for Phil, he has earned the wrath of Superior Spider-Man. Things are going to get ugly, especially when Otto figures out Phil's secret identity.

Dan Slott continues to deliver these big crazy scenarios. This is definitely not the Spider-Man you used to know. It's not supposed to be. We never know what's coming next and that's part of what makes this such a fascinating read. With hints of the return of the Green Goblin, we can be sure things are going to be getting even crazier.

Humberto Ramos' art fits so well with Spider-Man stories. While the art is mostly split with Ryan Stegman, we can be thankful we don't have to be the ones to select who gets to do the art. We get to be the ones to sit back and enjoy it.

The Bad

Octavius is setting out to show how "Superior" he is but some things almost go too easily for him. It could just be Slott building up Otto's "successes" for the inevitable big fall. It just seemed like some events happened too easily here.

This two-part story does feel like it's a lead in to a bigger one. That's not necessarily bad but even though there's an ending, it's not quite over just yet.

The Verdict

Get ready for Superior Spider-Man vs Hobgoblin round 2. Otto Octavius is determined to do things in what he views as an efficient end to crime. The action escalates and Phil Urich, as Hobgoblin, is going to have some fancy footwork to do in order to make it out of this one. Dan Slott continues this wacky (and sometimes deadly) adventure with a different sort of Spider-Man. That means we never know what to expect as there's no telling what SUPERIOR Spider-Man will do. Humberto Ramos pours fun and excitement into the art making the action feel even bigger and more spectacular. There is more to the story than this conclusion. Slott definitely has me hooked for the long haul.

Awesome issue. I can't wait for next issue. I have no idea how Miguel O'Hara will come into the picture, if it will actually be him and what's going to happen. I'm just stumped with anticipation!

Interesting issue too, there's a change being shown in SpOck's character and how he behaves. He felt less... devious and obnoxious this issue. Great review!

I love this series. I love this characterization of Peter. I love Ock. What I do not love is that only Charlie seems to really understand that Peter isn't Peter. He has an army, an island, has beaten villains to a pulp, and even speaks differently. I'm really just shocked that no one is putting these things together and going for Ock's throat. I'm wondering whats going to happen with the 2099 arc. Who knows...I just know that this cannot last forever.......right? I mean...I like it but...eventually they'll have to do something....

"Who knows...I just know that this cannot last forever.......right?"

That's not what Dan Slott said. He said he's here to stay.

@ngrey651: how many people have said the same things about their books? Everything changes eventually.

I've picked up the last 3 issues and I'm happy with it. It's a good book. I LOVE the new suit. I wouldn't mind it staying this way even when Peter comes back. Except maybe those wrist things, but I could live with them. Hobgoblin is always cool when he shows up. As for the Goblin King. No way it's Norman. No reason to hide that it's him, so I'm going with Harry just because of the female goblin character. I forgot her name.

My guess with the Goblin is that it's actually Peter himself. I need to check the timeline of events because it's been awhile since I've read Amazing Spiderman, but Norman woke up from his coma right around the time Spock took over Peter, so my thoughts are that Peter realized he couldn't get his body back and went to comatose Norman, and is currently plotting a way to get back at Spock. I actually have dialogue from the comics that foreshadows it and is way too ironic. I haven't really seen this theory anywhere else but I'm sticking with it until I'm proven wrong

@thecheesestabber: that's what I'm here for ;D go back and read all the goblin dialogue with that in mind. Especially the last two issues. Anytime you think he's talking about Urich, I think he's really talking about Spock

I want to believe that Peter is the Goblin King.

But then... I also like the idea that Peter was simply brainwashed.

Octavius is setting out to show how "Superior" he is but some things almost go too easily for him.

This and the selective stupidity of the heroes and friends in Pete's life have been the books biggest weaknesses from the start. Still fun, but would have been even more so if more tightly put together.

SSM will go on for 100 issues. ;-D

I predict that the Big Setup is the story does a timeskip to 20 years in the future where he rules the Earth, and Venom(Mayday) emerge to topple him from his thrown.

This book is so good. The art is great as expected and we get a lot of good interaction within Peter Parker's supporting cast, criminal and ally alike. The plot is just getting thicker by the issue. I enjoy seeing Superior being awesome at crime fighting but I also love bearing witness to some screw ups that could bite him back big time.

I especially like how the Goblin King mentions how he should've kept Phil's identity to himself. He could've caught him alone and confronted him about being a Hobgoblin wannabe. Probably could've used him to locate the real Hobgoblin. Instead Superior got flustered so badly by Goblin King's virus that he panicked and made Ulrich's identity public knowledge. Not only did it create a moment of panic for the Daily Bugle staff but it ruined the lives and reputations of at least two employees. It even put Phil on Gobby's radar. And the next thing on Ty's revenge list, can not wait.

While he may claim to be superior he's made some crucial mistakes and the longer it takes him to notice the goblin virus the harder it will be to remain on top of the street level food chain. Thanks for keeping it real with these reviews.

I hope so; I love Peter, but how can you top this? if Peter comes back they'll get a bit of mileage out of him undoing all of SpOck's stuff, and then it'll be back to same old, same old. SSM is FRESH
