is it just me or does Dark Supergirl look exactly like Selene
They do look a little similar, but then they're by the same artist, and the expression is similar. It's not a case of Greg Landing, though - The nose is different, the shape of her face is different, the ears and hair are different, etc, etc.
" That art is effin terrible. "Yeah, I'm not a fan either.
I'm curious as to what the actual film's art will look like though.
How is it the same artist? Clayton Crain did Necrosha. Assuming he did also do the cover for Batman Superman Apocalypse, he's not the kind of artist who recycles his own work (ala Greg Land).
" I've read that story arc and although everyone from artemis to harbinger looked the same, she didnt look as generic as this.. sad though, the goth-girl look for a heroine-turned-villainess is so not original. "They did all look the same.
May Michael Turner rest in peace but I really never understood the appeal of his work.
How can an artist not understand the "big" part of Big Barda?
He did decently well with Barda. You'd be surprised how many artists get something as basic as the height wrong, let alone her other eponymous attributes.
Its certainly not uncommon for an artist to re-use certain expressions regularly. I haven't heard of very many actually doing a dupe of their own reverse, though.
" No. It's just the same artist. Supergirl's blonde, Selene isn't. "One tiny portion of the cover is the same, but that doesn't make it the same artist. Clayton Crain doesn't copy & paste his work like Greg Land does. Someone else has taken that pose & re-used it.
People should be looking for the original poses that provided the Batman, Superman & Darkseid portions of the cover. Compare those original poses with other artists' work.
" @Gylan Thomas said:Are you thinking that it might be an homage cover using various poses? The Superman looks uncannily like (to me) Brandon Routh from Superman Returns." My point is that people are blaming Clayton Crain. He provided the art for Necrosha. No-one knows if he did the art for this DVD cover, so how can they blame him for recycling art? It's not his style to recycle poses.
Find examples of where the other three poses came from (the Superman, Batman & Darkseid portions of the cover). I would be willing to bet money that they are not from Clayton Crain's back cataclogue of work, but from a wide variety of comics.
I would be willing to bet that as well.
" @Ferris08 said:I agree.. Barda looked more supermodel than superheroine in that one.. like stick-figure-ish supermodel.. but the dark-tinted-style and his depiction of Batman is pure awesomeness.." "What's shown above may not be similar but it definitely shows only subtle changes in faces between Supergirl and Selene.
That wasn't really a photoshop, it was just Power Point. Power Point happens to have a lot of options for taking an element and giving it a spin, resize, or semi-transparency. You can make jpegs out of it, but they're restricted to sizes that are typical for presentations, which is why there's a lot of white space around the image." @MrMiracle77: what u did is freakin' amazing.. "
And credit where credit is due, I wasn't the one who spotted the similarities in the first place.
On closer inspection of the images, I found a number of key differences:
Selene's eyes are shaped like slightly cutoff ovals, Supergirl's are more rectangular.
Supergirl's nose is narrower and more triangular.
Selene's pose covers a different portion of her neck.
Supergirl's ears are taller and more pointed than Selene's.
Its easy to glance at the pictures and let details like the black lipstick, widow's peak, and choker overpower many of the other differences. Those things tend to stand out quite a bit. I don't think this is a trace, though.
