Though balloons ahoy!
The Story:
It's just another day at Smallville High – girl trouble psychic attacks, gym class, lunch with Kid Flash, study hall and alien terrorists from the future!
The Review:
Jeff Lemire's Superboy continues to develop into one of my favorite books, along with his Sweet Tooth, every month. The developments in this issue have the story moving along well. Not so break neck as the last issue, which is appreciated. That is not to say the story was slow and full of down time that is wasn't. Lemire is filling out Connor much like he is with Gus in Sweet Tooth. He makes me care more than I did before for the character. The story brings Lori Luthor to the forefront. She is strangely not affected by what is happening to all of those, including Superboy, around her. It will be interesting to follow to its end. Connor and Simon’s relationship takes a turn and for Simon it isn't a happy one. I really wish that hadn't had to happen but the carelessness of Simon hastened it. However, Connor does need to be a bit more careful with his switching into Superboy mode and that is all I'll say there. One more major point of interest is the use of thought balloons is employed here. Great Mr. Lemire just great!
Pier Gallo's art is in fine form here. In fact, I would say that it improved from the first two issues. Small complaints would be in the coloring. I really don't like Jamie Grants pallet. I would like more muted earth toned book. Much like Superboy's run on Adventure Comics. I feel that it is a bit distracting.
To Sum up:
Good start to a new arc. I like the addition of the young man that comes to visit and can't wait to see where the cliffhanger goes. The line art is good but the coloring takes the book down a bit in my opinion. Still a strong buy recommend for the series and now is a good time to jump on.
