Expressway to Hell; Desiring Martine; In Stone last edited by steelhandcuffs on 10/25/22 09:39AM View full history

    This issue features three stories.

"Expressway to Hell" - Jason, a runaway teen, hops a freight train and meets a trio of gangbangers also riding the rails, as well as a silent young woman huddled in a corner.  Also in the boxcar is a dead bum wrapped in a cloak, and Jason helps the thugs throw the body off the train.  As they proceed, they gather a few more runaway children.  Soon they discover another wrapped body which they had somehow missed, and dispose of it similarly.
They continue until they reach the train's stop where they meet another gangster and his van.  They all climb aboard and are taken to the gang leader, K-Tel, at his warehouse headquarters.  K-Tel intends to put the kids on the street and so to make them dependent on him he insists they smoke crack.  As Jason protests, the wrapped body again appears, but now it rises and is revealed to be Cloak.  The silent woman sheds her coat, showing herself to be Dagger, while the thugs fire upon Cloak.  She dispatches the gangsters with her light knives, as Cloak overwhelms them with his darkness.
Later, aided by Cloak and Dagger, Jason and the other runaways are set up at runaway shelters.

"Desiring Martine" - Martine Bancroft, having found a new lease on life, works as an editor at 'Enitce' magazine.  Outside her office window, Michael Morbius, who was her fiance before he became the Living Vampire, spies on her, torn between remaining in the shadows or revealing his presence to her.  While she and her assistant deal with the demands of her publisher who has ordered the revival of a Betty Page-like character, Morbius waits outside reliving his origin.  Exasperated by the editorial situation, Martine steps out onto the terrace for air while Morbius hides in the shadows above.  He nearly reaches out for her, but then thinks better of it and remains in the dark.  While her assistant leaves to find back issues featuring the character, Martine takes a phone call from an old friend, who talks of problems with her teen-age daughter.  The conversation ends when the assistant returns with the magazines.  Outside, Morbius glides away, pondering the possibility of helping Martine's friend as way to get in his former fiancee's good graces.

"In Stone" - For months, Isaac Christians, the Gargoyle, has sat like his stone namesake upon the corner of an abandoned rural Virginia church.  One lightning-splashed night, he is roused from his stupor by the arrival of Seetah, a goddess-like entity.  She transports him to another dimension which she calls the Land, and there, Isaac is attacked by demonic beings.  Their assault leaves him in his once-dead human form, but he wills himself back into the Gargoyle, and using his mystic energies, dispels the demons.
Isaac feels he's regained his purpose and his soul and thanks Seetah.  She replies he is the knight her people have been waiting for, as implores him to "seek the Heart of Silver", then returns him to Virginia.  Materializing before him is a stone tablet upon which are inscribed the words, "One Heart Can Change the World."  He soars with joy, as Seetah smiles and watches from the Land.  [Cont. in SILVER SURFER Vol. 3, #139.]
