    Retro Review - Thanksgiving 1990!

There is nothing on this planet more corny, hilarious and "out there" than the science fiction of DC Comics from the 1950s and 1960s. Strapped by the Comics Code Authority, comic book companies were trying to come up with stories that were not shocking or bloody but unfortunately when the opposite side of the pendulum, writing fair and forgettable stories.

Despite this, great art by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson raised the bar on these books.

Strange Adventures 132 I picked up for a song mainly because I heard of the Thanksgiving story. The comic book was only TEN CENTS at publication and posted three stories. Let's review them briefly.

"The Dreams of Doom" discover a race of beings (orange with yellow beaks!) who are into conquering other planets and are quite arrogant about the whole thing. It's a game they play. When choosing planets, one of the dream warriors gets Earth. The whole story revolves around the dreamers creating weapons from their minds. Of course a minor scientist solves the whole thing. Not a bad story, if far-fetched!

"Toyride to the Stars" is a kid's story about a future where a boy accidentally starts a time/space machine. Hey, it happens. Good detailed art and inking.

"Thanksgiving Day 1990!" is a continuing story (from issue to issue) about the Atomic Knights, survivors from the atomic war of 1986 and have managed to save enough food and seeds to have a Thanksgiving Day among the survivors of the war. Everything is great until these soldiers from Atlantis (who had set off a cobalt bomb 10,000 years ago and ended up in the Atomic Knights' back yard -- long story) come in with "sun beam weapons" and crash the Pilgrim party. The Knights beat them back until next issue (to be continued, natch)!

These old comics also included special education for kids. The centerfold has an Ask the Science Editor section with questions surrounding astronomy plus a star map. Cool!

Price Guide Collector's Item in Near Mint: $195.00!
