Star Wars #2

The Good

This comic series has started out with a pretty crazy feeling. We know that since it's set between Episode IV and Episode V, certain things can and can't happen. The first issue set up the scenario with Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 on a mission to destroy the biggest weapon factory in the Empire.

Who would have thought we'd see Luke Skywalker come face to face with Darth Vader right away? There's no way he's even close to be ready for a lightsaber duel with the Dark Lord of the Sith. Jason Aaron handles this beautifully. With neither being aware of who the other truly is, you'll be on the edge of your seat during the encounter. Darth Vader has to find out at some point who Luke is, right? This previously was depicted in a novel but we know that doesn't necessarily count anymore.

John Cassaday gets to draw some really big Star Wars action. It definitely feels on a different scale from the movie and that helps make the story here simply feel bigger than past Star Wars comics we've seen before. The detail as vehicles or environments take damage during the fight along with the gunfire and chaos looks really good.

The Bad

The lack of Chewbacca was a little disturbing.

Seeing Luke face off against Darth Vader with a lightsaber or the use of a certain vehicle that appears in one of the movies does feel a little weird. It's a weird in a good way though. It feels like it's catching you off guard or it shouldn't be happening "yet," but Aaron is making it all fit together nicely.

The Verdict

Jason Aaron continues to find the right mix of action, adventure, and humor while also throwing in some bigger and impressive moments. There are some parts that feel bigger than the movies but Aaron's writing and John Cassaday's art makes it work nicely. Despite any limitations being set between Episodes IV and V, there is still plenty of action, suspense, and even some fun. This series is proving to be a great addition to the characters and events we know and love. This book makes me feel like a kid again.

Cool review. I'm not a Star Wars fan but I'm gonna continue with this to see where it goes.

I've never read SW books, but tried this one on for size.

It's damn-near perfect

@starbrand1: well it is written by Mark Waid. and the focus will be on her back-story which hasn't been touched on a whole lot even in the past DH comics.

so yaa im with you on that excitement.

my excitement for the Darth Vader book is purely for the artwork.

Aaron's book is fun, but that's about it nothing has really been that great. it has action but TOO much that it feels way out of place.

But i supposed Episode 7 is going to be just that alot of action. so maybe it fits, maybe it doesn't i don't know

Really enjoying this so far! I really didn't know what to expect from this series. Hopefully the other books will be as good.

Enjoyed the comic BUT I can't make sense of Vader saying

in ANH : "The force is strong with this one" when he is flying a very long distance behind Luke.

in Marvel #1: "The rebel pilot who destroyed the death star .. i can feel his precense" .. when he is very far away from Luke at that moment

which is constent

But suddenly does not recognize Luke as having a strong force connection:

"The force will never be with you boy"

in #2 AND does not recognize Luke as beeing the pilot how destroyed the death star.

"And then you will lead me to the revel pilot that destroyed the death star".

Maybe he is just taunting in the first case. BUT how can he not sense that Luke is the Pilot he is looking for.

Its almost as if Vader's sense of the force works very well from a distance but not if in close proximity of Luke ....

Nitpicking perhaps but I would have expected Vader to recognize the Pilot when he is in front of him when he felt him in ANH and #1 from a far distance ..

@franki1234: I think the idea is that Vader assumes the pilot is there and a part of the mission, but when he sees Luke (at first) fumbling around with the lightsaber he figures that couldn't possibly be him, that the pilot must be someone else. But then later when he sees Luke on the speeder bike he begins to wonder.

I'm guessing that just because Vader can sense the pilot's presence doesn't necessarily mean he can pinpoint his or her exact location.

I enjoyed this story. It's still a little too much on the in-jokes (3P0 being taken apart again, etc.), but I liked the Luke/Vader confrontation a lot, and Han's vehicular hijinks. But honestly, the art kind of sucks. Maybe sucks is a little harsh, but not by a lot. He can't draw stormtroopers to save his life, and his Vader isn't very good either. I'm surprised that Marvel didn't go with their very best for a high profile book like this.

I have enjoyed the first two issues. Being a huge Star Wars fan, I am happy to see the continuation of the original trilogy and filling in the gaps between the movies.

Not a lot seem to happen in this issue to really move the story along. The confrontation between Luke/Vader was cool to see, and I really enjoy the banter between Leia and Han in the AT/AT.

I do enjoy John Cassaday's art. He seems to capture the characters well. Overall, the writing is good, but I found some of the dialogue a bit awkward. As an example, when confronting Vader, Luke says something to the effect of "You killed Master Kenobi!". Not sure Luke would refer to Obi-Wan this way.

Overall, I am happy with the direction of the story. I look forward to the next issue and the Darth Vader & Princess Leia minis coming out over the next few months.

Either this is the best book of all time, or the greatest comic in history.

Am I the only one worried about C3PO? Those critters sure look like they can run fast and far.
