Poll Is Star Wars still cool without The Force and Lightsabers? (88 votes)

Yes, it´s interesting enough for me. 47%
No, It just doesn´t feel Star Wars that way 53%

So since the release of the Rogue One trailer (and way before, actually) I keep reading comments like "It´s not Star Wars without Jedi and lightsabers", the Force, etc...

I personally find it still cool without all that stuff, I loved Republic Commando, and I wanted so bad to play 1313

And I guess there are cool stories in the comics too

What do you think? Do you agree?

I find it a hell of a lot more interesting. But then this is because every single detail about The Force, Jedi/Sith and lightsabers have been the forefront of Star Wars since the beginning and main debaters and lore nuts have been focusing on that for the majority and continuously throw out information(so I guess seeing pretty much the same info, to me at least gets rather tiresome). Thus everything else is hidden behind those things and thus, you see just how big the SWU is and also stumble upon some great characters, technology and the like in the process.

I wouldn't say it isn't Star Wars without them, but I will say things like lightsabers, The Force, and the dueling ideologies between the Jedi and Sith are some of the main draws for me. It becomes kind of non distinct from other sci-fi universes without those.

    • Uh yes and no..I mean you can make and there are plenty of compelling stories that exist without those elements.
    • But without said elements what separates Star Wars from other Sci Fi stories or your run of the mill generic sci fi space story? Not much..And their actually not as good as a-lot of other Sci Fi stories becuase.. Since its Star Wars and the landscape is more fantasy based and the fact that it exist within its own unique world, those stories lack the inadvertent sci fi effects common with the genre like technological advancements and scientific growth and awe inspiring wonder that many other notable Sci fi stories have..Alot of times its just generic military fiction thats happens to take place in Space..Since theres that core magic element of the force, theres really no need to work hard on the actually science and technology of the universe..Like giving us fascinating and interesting explanations on how the tech and science work..Its instead just really lazy..Because like i said the tech is a backdrop used as more of a convenience and means to an end..When you have a plot point and world building element like The force you dont really need the extra effort of doing all that to make your stories compeling and intresting.
    • Its the light-sabers and force elements, Jedi and Sith lore/Mytholgy that really make Star Wars standout from other stories...Thats its main trademark/strong-suit and Disney certainly knows that..lmao

Star Wars does have that, it's just not as noted because, ding, ding Star Wars mainly focuses on The Force, Jedi/Sith at the forefront.

You have to actually dig to find the other things such as tech advancement and science related things.

To me, it's always been about the character interactions, how they deal with each other and the messes they keep getting into. The Force, the Jedi, and lightsabers are a cool part of all that, but they're just a part of the whole. Maybe the over emphasis on it is part of why I hated the prequels so much. Heck, the ONLY interesting parts in those movies were the lightsaber fights, and that's just not enough for me.

Actually the force concept (as created/executed) seems too much vague/archaic for current (Sci-Fi) live action worldbuildings...

The Force and the related concepts of the Light and Dark side of it lend Star Wars gravitas.

Every time we get a story that's in your face about not having Force-sensitives in it it's sold as giving us a glimpse at a "new side of Star Wars" or something like that.

And then we're treated to some forgettable cast of rogues tooling around.

I do really love learning more about the criminal underground and spend time in the universe. That is why I was pretty excited about 1313 and why I love just walking around and exploring the city streets in KOTOR.

If these hallmarks were removed entirely from the Star Wars universe it would become Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. I think it needs the mystical aspects of the Force and Jedi to distinguish itself from other space operas. Having said this, I am still eager for Rogue One as I was a big fan of some of the EU stories that didn't directly involve Jedi stuff.

The comics and episodes that focused on troopers are some of my favorites, so I can probably live without them, at least for a good long while.

Honestly, there are times that they go way too deep into the Force lore that it just gets ridiculous. I liked it better when there was a little more mystery behind it.

Star Wars is pretty much based on the Force and Jedi/Sith with lightsabers. But an occasional spin-off story with laser guns and star ships can still be interesting. Rogue One was a great movie. The many episodes in TCW primarily about bounty hunters were interesting as well.

So if Star Wars completely wiped the Force and lightsabers, it'd be pretty boring. But stuff like Rogue One is fine.
