Resistance is Futile, but Bow Ties are Cool
This is crossover the entire science fiction nerd community has been waiting for for the better part of the last 45 years. This is the big one. The most epic team up since JLA/Avengers. And... sadly it's off to a rather slow start. It's a solid story but I think the first issue spends a bit too much time on one half of the party, in this case, The Doctor and company, and no time at all with the Enterprise crew. We start off on the planet of Delta IV, who Trek fans will remember as the home planet of Lt. Ilia from Stark Trek the Slow Motion Picture. (trust me, that's what it's called) They're under attack by an alliance between the Borg and the Cybermen. I guess this is what happens when their Oath of Celibacy is not on record. To summarize: Borg + Cyberman = We're all screwed. Cut to Ancient Egypt, where the Doctor and his companions Rory "The Roman" Williams and Amelia "Oh Karen Gillan, Be My Bride!" Pond are engaged in their regular shenanigans. Moving on, wimbly wobbly, Bowties are cool, Alien threat vanquished, Geronimo, let's get to why we came here already. So the Doctor lands somewhere in San Francisco 1941, or do they? The issue ends with the Doctor spotting Data and Riker in a bar and realizing that something is up.
What Works:
The Art work is gorgeous and feels very reminiscent of Alex Ross. The threat of the Cybermen/Borg Alliance is very well done and the two together come off as very imposing. The Eleventh Doctor is written excellently with all of Matt Smith's various quirks intact.
What Doesn't:
As I mentioned before, there isn't enough focus on the other half of the crossover. Don't get me wrong, the more I get to stare at the lovely Amy Pond the happier I am, but this is supposed to be a Star Trek story as well as a Doctor Who Story, we need both to make this work.
Overall
4/5
Despite the lack of balance, this is still a promising start. I personally cannot wait until the next issue. Allons-y
