The USS Defiant, the sister ship of The Enterprise has disappeared in uncharted space. When they find her, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Ensign Chekov board her only to discover that this is an unstable region of space and the Defiant is slipping between dimensions. The Enterprise, likewise is experiencing anomalies, and can only manage to beam back three of the away team, leaving Kirk behind.

Back aboard The Enterprise, Spock assumes command, but immediately begins bumping heads with Dr. McCoy who insists the disruption has caused madness among the crew and it will only worsen if they don't leave the area. To make matters worse, an alien ship belonging to the Tholians arrive on the scene. They claim this region of space as their territory and demand The Enterprise leave immediately.
