Hyperion. Power Princess. Doctor Spectrum. Nighthawk. The Blur. Once they were a team of super heroes - a Squadron Supreme - but the greatest of the heroes vanished without a trace, leaving a beateen and damaged world behind them. Five years have passed.

Disgraced spy Nick Fury joins forces with two ex-Squadron members - the probability-altering Arcanna Jones and criminal genius Emil Burbank - to investigate the disappearance of the crew of NASA's new moon landing. Fury finds the Icarus One crewmembers - Kathy and Jon Mora, Ted Munn, and Peter Boyer - in government captivity and fantastically transformed. it seems they were exposed to the same alien material that originally gave rise to the squadron. The four use their new-found powers to escape, and in the ensuing chaos, Burbank is rendered comatose.

But it seems the spore - or whatever it is - that gives powers had already entered Earth's atmosphere, passing from person to person before granting abilities to Mangog and Wolf, Ruler of the Winds - two god-like titans waging war in the American Southwest. The bodies of American soldiers from all of its wars come to life as the patriotic Old Soldier. Biogeneral, the alias of tech-wizard Tucker Ford, uses an astonishing metal suit to save lives in California. And teen Nell Ruggles uses her spider-like powers to terrorize Nebraska...

...until ex-Squadron-er Blur brings Ruggles to the headquarters of Fury and Arcanna, who've teamed up with Biogeneral and Old Soldier. Meanwhile, Burbank awakens from his coma, dons a frightening mask, and starts pursuing his own agenda. Which would have been foremost on the minds of Fury and his makeshift Squadron Supreme - if it weren't for the crew of the Icarus One revealing themselves on live TV...
