Spider-Woman
Character » Spider-Woman appears in 2324 issues.
Spider-Woman is an Avenger and spy who got her powers from an experiment gone wrong. She has been an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and S.W.O.R.D., as well as a Private Investigator. Jessica was a crucial character in Marvel's Secret Invasion comic book event.
Who likes Spider -Woman pregnant
I don't think anyone has ever thought to themselves "you know, if Spider-Woman was pregnant, I would buy her comic."
@immolation: If anyone ever googled a spider and a woman at Marvel they'd notice they already have a single mom Spider woman. Julie Carpenter has a lil girl. Stupid pointless and its like they are saying watch us shake things up by knocking up a female character who in different issues by different writers has said she doesn't want children. Lets impregnate a female character!!!!! Im almost done with comics in general now. All of my favorites are being ruined or retconned out.
Pregnancy in comics works so well. Just not in this way. Pregnant and fighting crime. I dont care what alien tech she has shes still endangering her child.
@theexile285: I was trying to cover all my bases sorry. I figured someone would say something if i didnt.
Indifferent so far. It hasn't hurt the character for me and hasn't improved the character. It's a new take on the character and telling a story we haven't really seen from a superhero. Sure we've seen heroes have kids but an actual story of a pregnant heroine and her dealing with the changes she has to make in her life and dealing with possible dilemmas of super child birth. The closest I've read was Sue Storm in the 60s (I didn't read in the 60s mind you :P) and she was essentially a background story that popped up every once in a while where she was worrying about the rest of the group.
So overall it has potential.

I know it is stupid. I have not read it, but I am hoping that it is just going to be some bs pregnancy that does not lead to actually having a child like we have seen a few times before. Unless she has someone to watch the kid it wouldn't make sense for her to continue to be a hero afterwards. It is also unrealistic for especially a woman, but sometimes men too, to want to continue to do something dangerous after having a kid. With the exception of Sue Storm most women in comics are rarely used after having a kid. Hopefully they don't go through with it and it is just marvels incredibly stupid way of trying to make people think wtf is going on here and buy the comic to see.
@feartheliving: Thank you for not only voting but sharing how you feel. But do you thing Sue Storm being a mother worked? I do because she was the "mother" to Ben and Johnny. It seemed natural for her to have children. Not just because she was a married housewife in '60s America.
@immolation: The lovely and wonderful Jessica Jones springs to mind. Her pregnancy was well done.
@kingoftheworld: But all she has done since is basically stand next to Cage or hold the baby. She don't have a solo series anymore like she used to and when we do see her she rarely even talks. I agree that her pregnancy was well done but in a way it ruined the character.
@immolation: I see your point. But hopefully fingers crossed a good writer will remember her since Marvel marketing division has to hype the show.

It was definitely the natural progression for the series. They were already taping into the family dynamic so it was only natural that they'd have kids and grow the family. Especially when there wedding was such a big deal to the Marvel Universe at the time, in comparison Hank and Jan's was no where near the event Reed and Sue's was.

I get the feeling we'll be getting a new JJ series sometime soon.
@ms-lola Did you want to share you're thoughts? I know you had some strong feelings about this when it was announced.
@kingoftheworld: @feartheliving: It actually has been hinted at the Jessica Jones will be getting a new series, but she most likely won't be seeing her do anything like we saw her do in Alias. She can't really resemble the person she was there because it would make her seem like a bad mother. Since alias she has not really had any character development either. Like I said, she either stands next to Cage or holds the baby.
@immolation: Oh i wasn't disagreeing with you sir. Just holding out hope.
I don't necessarily think that pregnancy in comics is bad, I just think it is usually handled badly.
I think that expands past this medium as well. Very few times in movies or shows are pregnancies done in a compelling or interesting way.
@dernman: Amen!!!!! They've been doing that for far too long now. There is a huge difference between experimental and desperation.
Hell no. This is another bad idea, in an ocean of God awful ideas started by Marvel aka Shock Value and Movie Company.
@ms-lola Did you want to share you're thoughts? I know you had some strong feelings about this when it was announced.
Thanks for the call out. Yes, I did have some strong feelings and most were around this being an interesting idea. Considering that most of the people who had a problem with the idea of her being pregnant and crime fighting was mostly due to the "unrealisticness" of it, I thought it was hilarious. Depicting someone in comics as being heavily pregnant and leaping about and kicking ass is the line to be drawn? Seriously? Ah, good times, good times....
Anyway, this just started out and I'm all kinds of confused because I bowed out of the whole Secret Wars and this is eight months into the future and no one knows what's going on. I love the art, I love how Jessica is being depicted and I love the new gang of side kicks, so I'd say I'm enjoying it. So far.
@ms-lola: So you like the storyline? Possibly if it had been with another female protagonist?
@ms-lola: So you like the storyline? Possibly if it had been with another female protagonist?
No idea what you mean about there being another female protagonist. It's hard to weigh in on the storyline when it's barely under way. I'm giving it a shot, mostly because of how Jessica and her gang have been portrayed from issue five onward, before Secret Wars came along and scrambled stuff up.
(edit: please don't tell me you're suggesting she be pregnant by another female?)
@ms-lola: Lol no sorry. I meant if it had been another female hero. You sounded like you liked the idea of a pregnant heroine?
@kingoftheworld: Oops, sorry!
Well, I guess, yeah, I do like the idea of a pregnant heroine. It could have been anyone, but it being Spider-Woman I think is a good choice. This first issue did kind of run through it quickly since she's about to give birth, but it did break it down a bit and did a good job in presenting it. I can understand how hard it would be if they were to draw out the pregnancy over a few issues since there's only so much she could do, within reason. Then again, considering how this issue ended, she might need to get physical.
@ms-lola: See I have to respectfully disagree. Spider woman was a bad choice. And it felt contrived not natural. And honestly a bad idea from Marvel in general since continuity changes so briskly nowadays. Future writers may not want any of this. An independent publisher using the same idea would be a much better story in my opinion. As long as they didn't call her Preggo-Woman or something.
@kingoftheworld: You won't find me disagreeing with you on the random part. See, with me? You're dealing with a beatup, wornout Marvel fan. Nonsense stories, character revamping, universe jumping characters have become the norm and I'm just reeling from the blows at this point. Last year at this time I would have insisted I was one of the biggest Marvel fans on this site. Now? Ehhhh, not so much. I'm clinging to a few characters out of loyalty's sake and one of them is Spider-Woman. So far, anyway. I'm prepared to drop her title like I did the X-Men titles (new and old) within the next couple of issues should things not start panning out properly.
Like, for instance, having Hawkeye behave as though he isn't the father of the baby is bugging me. A lot. I'm letting myself hope that might not be the case but based on this first issue, that's not looking so good. I'm even tempted to put the idea out there that Tony might be a contender, only because her reaction to his question about who the father was resulted in her declaring with incredulous anger to Carol that he had the audacity to even ask. Not saying this interpretation is correct (just speculating, and terribly at that) but like I mentioned above, I'm a roughed up Marvel fangirl. A twist like that would not surprise me in the slightest.
(edited to put stuff under a spoiler tag, just in case)
@ms-lola: Oh im with you. Marvel has lost its most adimant yet jaded supporter. I read Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Doctor Strange and thats about it. DC lost me with New 52. Im catching up on Ms Marvel and thats about it. And dude i love Spiderwoman more than almost anyone. Her getting pregnant was like she cheated on me haha.
But anyway I dont know if youve seen but theve announced shes having the kid by issue 5 so all the pregnant superhero angst and drama nonsense is over as soon as it started. I can almost guarantee theyll skip over or gloss over any post partum issues she may have because comic writers apparently cant use google. But i agree with you that it is a good idea. Just not something to be done by Marvel. And the next writer is sure to change things around either slightly or drasticly. This time next year shell probably be from another alternate Universe or something.
@kingoftheworld: Issue five? Okay, that has me laughing. So, in the first issue, they speed race through her pregnancy (glossing over the how and why), and bring her right up to heavilypregnantgivebirthanydaynow to making that last four more issues? This is monthly. What in the hell, man.
Aww, haha, okay, I get where you're coming from with the whole her getting pregnant and feeling like you've been cheated on. Interesting point there. I wonder how I'd feel if someone suddenly threw a child of Daredevil's into the swing of things (What If's and future non canon stories notwithstanding).
You are right about them glossing it over, and you are right about another writer coming along and sweeping this all under the rug, which is crap since that happens with most pregnant superheroes. Not including Susan of F4 but she doesn't really count considering she was introduced as empty arm candy for Reed. I have no idea how long baby Danielle is going to stay a baby (Cage's kid) and anyone who does have a kid has been shipped off somewhere.
Sorry to hear you are another Marvel fan casualty. I have Moon Girl's first issue but haven't read it yet. I will now, though. Thanks for the reminder.
@ms-lola: I love Devil Dinosaur. The more random and obscure and most importantly Jack Kirby created a hero is im there. :) Oh Danielle Cage?? Well in secret wars 3 shes gonna fall through a time door and age up to be the next Iron Fist and in Civil War 3 shes gonna be killed.

And as you can see in issue 5.... Pregnancy storyline over bounced back from having a baby in record time. Radio active spider - metabolism. Marvel now has two Single Mom Spider Women which is gonna be their new mini out in April. Written by someone. Yes im jaded and grumpy. Arania better swing by CVS....just saying

I need to quote that. But just so you know, Jessica is being portrayed as having nine months gestation. They just can't be bothered with properly showing that. Nope. Just the baby, please. And heavily pregnant for four issues.
(and you made me laugh pretty hard with your original comment)
@ms-lola: Well thank you. I like making people laugh. Especially fellow jaded comics fans.
And im not kidding. Arania the pregnant teenage spider is gonna be in Previews..just you wait!

It also helped that Franklin and Valeria are so cool kid characters.
As for Jessica, I haven't read the series but I like the idea. She deserves some happiness and being a pregnant superhero kinda fits. She hasn't had the most stable and her decisions in the past have been a bit questionable. At least based on the stories I've read. Honestly, that's what makes her character interesting.
Honestly, I like her pregnant. She's a fun character and the way she approaches motherhood is refreshing because it's not cliche or cookie-cutter. I feel like a lot of people who oppose the idea don't/haven't read the book and make a lot of assumptions.
@uncanny_doom: Not really alot of us commenting have read her prior adventures. Ive read everything Jessica Drew has been in since her first apperance and this as well. It just doesnt suit her. It is a good idea for a comic but it just didnt work for me in this case. If IMAGE had done this it would be a series not 3 issues of pregnancy drama and much better care paid attention. Usually in Marvel the kid or character is put aside by later writers or used for some murderous drama and if she were a lesser knowm or newly created character she would be cannon fodder for later writers and their villan sues of the month or shed have a better chance being from another dimension like Spider-Gwen which she will probably be retconned into. I am glad you like it though and are enjoying the run. I havent really felt Dennis Hopless grasped her as a character. Also it just hasnt been a hit in the store i work at. Marvel would like to say they understand but they really dont when it comes to such things.
@kingoftheworld: Well, I think the purpose of this run is very clearly to try to take her into a different direction. I honestly didn't like it until she changed her costume, and with that the book became more self-aware and fun. I think the fact that pregnancy doesn't suit Jessica is what makes it so interesting. Rather than playing off the typical attitude female characters have with pregnancy, Jessica stays true to her own character. It's not the best thing ever as far as the concept goes, and I do agree it could be better along with the fact that what it leads to being worth it is still up in the air.
