THE BASICS
Namor has a bone to pick with Doctor Doom and picks Victor's visit to ESU as the time to strike. Given the title of the series, it's not hard to guess who gets caught in the middle.
MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF
- This first issue feels a whole lot like Dan Slott's Spider-Man and The Human Torch series, which is very much to my liking. It's lighthearted, goofy fun prominently featuring two wisecracking heroes in a dangerous situation. Not to mention the fact that Doom is the main antagonist of this series first issue, just like he was in Slott's. It's hardly a carbon copy, though. There's plenty of stuff here that's its own, but following in the footsteps of one of the funnest mini series around surely isn't a bad thing.
- Scenes between Peter and Johnny seem to almost write themselves. The two of them are at the "rival" point in their long standing relationship during the course of this story and the dialogue is suitably hilarious. Since this issue primarily focuses on them, nearly every page has funny moments to enjoy.
- Even when the bug and the matchstick aren't interacting with each other, the entertainment value is high. The script is well done and the art contributes well to the stories light mood.
FEEL THE STING OF MY DISCONTENT!
- The story here isn't the best, or even that good. I really liked the setup, which involved the Fantastic Four being forced to act as Doctor Doom's body guards. You could do a lot of really cool things with that, but instead, we get a pretty lackluster story involving a Freaky Friday body switch, a giant whale thing, and lederhosen.
WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE
This issue has a great tone and mood to it, but it suffers in the story department. Worth a read, though, thanks to a great script.
