Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider as a teenager, granting him spider-like powers. After the death of his Uncle Ben, Peter learned that "with great power, comes great responsibility." Swearing to always protect the innocent from harm, Peter Parker became Spider-Man.
His books from the 90s by David Michelin were okay if you enjoyed Michelin's Spider-Man. They were very tied into what was going on with Venom in the Spider-Man comics, so they might not be good if you are new to the character.
Maybe check out Spider-Man: Birth of Venom and Spider-Man: Vengeance of Venom before getting into his solos.
Venom by Rick Remender is my absolute favorite Venom run. I also enjoyed Venom: Spaceknight by Robbie Thompson though it is really different from other Venom books. Other than that, one of the classic Venom comics is Venom: Lethal Protector.
But I do agree with @blindinglights that you should probably check out some of Venom's appearances in Spider-Man before reading his solos.
