I know he's gifted and possibly a genius in certain fields but this:

Just screams idiocy in my opinion or self braggatory with perfidy and a bit of humor.

I've never seen him do anything that remotely suggests his IQ is 250+. Batman's is 190 and he's much smarter than Peter Parker.

I'm not playing anything. From all the comics I've read of Spider-Man, I never seen anything that remotely suggested he's even close to that IQ.

He invented his own web shooters at 15 years old. I dunno how that ranks on an IQ score, but it's something.

Batman would be much higher then 190, I'm 134 and I know there is a significant difference in numbers there but trust me when I say that the way they rank IQ scores in comics is completely off. You don't even have to be that smart to get a high IQ score, it's really a matter of the type of upbringing you have. I'm not really that smart and I still have a borderline genius IQ, trust me IQ scores don't mean s##t. They are culturally skewed in favor of certain upbringings.

I dunno, I'm rocking a 150 and I feel pretty smart. Sometimes the scores are skewed though -- that one porn star, I forget her name, has an extremely high IQ despite being ditsy as all hell. She just had a specific talent for IQ-test-style questions.

Officially Spidey is listed as having a "Gifted" intellect, the same as Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde (as opposed to "Learned" like Cyclops and Cap, "Genius" like Magneto and Beast, and "Super Genius" like Hank Pym and Reed Richards). This may be changed in the future (it's good not to put too much stake in handbook stuff anyway).

People is saying that Batman is smarter, but lets nor forget that he is also one of the richest people in the DC universe, and Peter is one of the poorest in the marvel universe....

    Funny scan is funny...
    Funny scan is funny...

Peter has shown great feats above the average intelligence, and that is all that people should know about him, a lot of writers have used Spider-man and they try to make him as smart as they can, but most of those writers are not geniuses, they are just average people, most of the users in Comic Vine are that normal too, so we can't say how smart is a character because the comics have never been that accurate.

I think that their minds are too different to compare, while both problem solvers, Batman is ridiculously smart in the sense that he is a detective can knows how to solve things based on how people react, where as Peter is all science and math. Not saying that they don't have some middle ground where their intellects overlay, but to me its comparing apples & oranges, like saying who's smarter, Sigmund Freud (Psychologist) or Albert Einstein (Physicist) its like apples and oranges.

A person's IQ is not a measure of their intelligence, it is a measure of a brains processing power/speed. A man with an IQ of 100 could be smarter than a man with an IQ of 150.

To put things in laymans terms: A man with an IQ of 100 could spend all his days studying and go on to graduate at the top of his classes, this would be like straining your old computer to play the latest games that came out, whereas the mind of a man with an IQ of 147 (*raises hand*) could be the mental equivelent of using a supercomputer to browse porn.

With all that said, a person's IQ is still a fairly reliable method of guaging intelligence, but that is NOT what an IQ test is about.

I also feel it necessary to add that an IQ of 250 would be considered so high as to have fallen into a margin of error. Almost every single IQ registered that has even passed 200 is considered highly dubious with few exceptions. IQ's above 145 are limited to only 2% of the entire worlds population and an IQ of 150/160 is considered GENIUS level, 140-150 is considered NEAR GENIUS (Ultimate Peter Parker's IQ is 145).

Rant over, point being: Writer didn't know what he was on about.

@PunkMastaFlex: Typical Pete. I don't know why you think that this specific moment shows Spidey is an idiot. You could say he has a strange sense of humour, being almost sarcastic, but all geniuses have their own sense of humour. See what I did there? LOL. Anyway, I think Peter is a genius and to be honest I like his humour, it's weird, authentic, sarcastic, full of melancholy, hope and something else I can't find at this very moment. My point is his humour is his shield, his way to surpass fear, that's what I believe. But who knows, maybe I can't see the obvious. Peter (along with Batsy) are my favourites. I grew up reading Spiderman, first hero, first comic love etc.

Marvel is far more indulgent with their intelligence than DC. Someone like Luthor is probably only in the 230 range, whereas in Marvel they'd say he was 300.

Spider-man to batman : nope, they were just high ranking CIA agents who died heroically fighting a super villain terrorist, but hey, at least they had the common sense not to wander up dark ominously named alleys with small children and lots of money in their pockets. Though in retrospect my parents probably could have beaten up the mugger

I'd say in IQ level, Batman is smarter than Spider-Man, but I say IQ tests are crap. They only test one type of intelligence. For all over intelligence, I'd say Peter beats Bruce, since Peter is more social, makes more jokes, etc. I'm sure that if Peter focused his mind on his studies, he could increase his intelligence though. I'd put him almost as smart as people like Stark, Reed, T'Challa, Pym, and McCoy. just barely not as smart.

Prep really isn't one of Peter's strong suits imo - he's not terrible but he is nowhere near batman or ironman's level for example. But how he thinks on his feet and comes up with solutions to problems as they happen shows how quick thinking and intelligent he is. Big Time's best aspect as an arc is that it shows Peter using his smarts. Also it's one of the few times as Spiderman that he has had the resources to match his intelligence (Long may he continue to work for Horizon labs!) So yeah I would definitely say he is top tier when it comes to natural intelligence.

He could be as smart as Tony Stark, but it's not really one of his focuses. As someone else already pointed out, one of the alternate reality visions Peter sees during OMD is basically him as Tony Stark. Since Big Time the creative team have been making a conscious effort to show that Peter has a gifted intellect and is a genius inventor. There are several times in the past where prominent minds have said that if Peter applied himself, he'd be brilliant. So I'd say is just a step below the likes of Reed on the smarty scale, nothing "super".

Bruce built/maintained an empire while using his ingenuity to augment his crime fighting and world saving. For the most part Peter barely got by as Peter, and as Spider-Man he relied on his powers to fight villains. Beyond his spider tracers, web shooters and modifications of those gadgets, Peter has rarely had any reason to flex his mind.

This is the guy built web shooters at 15, the guy who has proven to outsmart even Iron Man, and the guy who managed to make a stealth suit that makes the wearer completely invisible. Last time I checked, Bats didn't invent anything like that. And stealth is his department.

Cures a flesh eating disease in minutes...

Hank Pym, himself, states that Spider-man is smarter than him...

And I didn't think Spidey was good at prep until he made this baby in Ends of the Earth...

This suit can detect Chameleon's specific heart beat, can give Spidey special vision that will let him know about Mysterio's illusions, electrical harpoons for Rhino, can find Sandman's "Queen Bee" sand grain where his thoughts are, is electricity proof for Electro, has magnetic webbing that can cut transmissions, and I even heard it gives him 100 ton class strength. DAMN!!! Spidey's no good at prep my ass!

dont forget he was getting similar IQ scores as Reed Richards when he was the same age as peter and that he also said that if pete stayed in the Science business, Peter would be rivaling him.

Personally, Peter's intellectual side is always downplayed by most Spider-Writers because they feared that it would take away the everyman feel away from the character and the connection to the reader.

This is scale against which "above average-genius" IQs are measured. Whoever describes comic character IQs is a little overly optimistic.

    115-124 - Above average

    125-134 - Gifted

    135-144 - Very gifted

    145-164 - Genius

    165-179 - High genius

    180-200 - Highest genius

Well he is one of the most intteligent marvel characters ever he defeated villans that many people think he cant like in ultimate spider man he defeated the frightful four (i know their was only 3 of them) in spectaculer spider man he defeated the sinister six many times in the seris and in web of shadows he helped save the world from the infection if you took the red side so he defeats villans that are inpossible for people to belive so he is clever and crafty in a way tricking the enemy into a trap so he is really intellegent

@PunkMastaFlex: Peter Parker is a highly intelligent nerd who is very smart and the brightest kid on the block but his studious side has to have some relief; that's where spider-man comes in. He is Peter's fun-loving, easier going side that Peter uses to escape from the stress of being a nerd. Not to mention, last I checked, it is called humor. Humor does necessarily indicate idiocy.

Yes! Last I heard, the ability to construct an adhesive polymer that expands upon contact, let alone launch it is a fairly good example of ingenuity! His webshooters required all three fields of polymer science (polymer characterization, polymer physics, and polymer chemistry), physics, physical chemistry, engineering in order to construct pressure vessels, knowledge of basic resigns, and in some cases mechanical engineering (ultimate webshooters which use motors from what I can tell). He later expands his knowledge to the field of robotics and electronic engineering and in the ultimate universe he has a fairly good knowledge of HTML and Java. His humor does not indicate stupidity!

I am willing to bet that if the Black Widow, She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, and Psylocke got to know Peter Parker side to Spider-Man, they would respectively become fast friends with him. Just like Carol Danvers!!!

Once the heroic age started they retconned peter to be a super genius so it's hard to say, but you shouldn't make your judgment off of anything before the heroic age because it's been retconned.

@3rdClawtotheleft: Peter has almost been smart but not a genius. According to the writers that write spider-man, and printed in the Marvel Encyclopedia you're wrong.

@Teerack: Web shooters and web fluid at 15... and that's at the very beginning of his mythos

not exactly the kind of stuff the average smart person can build

HAHA what a complete shot in the dark at human physiology. That is 100% not true. Maybe you're confusing intelligence with immaturity? Because humor can but not necessarily indicate immaturity.

@JairamGanpat: LOL Well first of all web fluid and web shooters a fiction and wouldn't actually work in real life. For a number of physic problems.

but putting things in perspective Bill Gates founded Microsoft at a young age and even before that had a long list of impressive fetes. Mark Zuckerberg created facebook when he was a college freshman. Sean Parker founded Napster and basically invented mainstream file sharing when he was very young.

All of these men are very smart people, but none of them are geniuses. They're just very gifted in a certain type of intelligence.

    @Teerack:

99.99% of all comic book science discoveries and creations would not work in real life due to Physics problems. You can't hold that against Pete :p

What about the Peter particles discovered in 692?
