The wall crawler from the future returns to the present.

Miguel O' Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 found himself stranded in the year 2014 with no way home by Tyler Stone. He found himself working for Liz Allen in the company called Alchemax. He must now try to manage his double life as an employee for the soon to be corrupt organization and his adventures as Spider-Man. -summary

While many people have faulted DC for having way too many Superman carbon copies flying around. Marvel has been guilty of this as well, but I have to admit that they have done a better job handling their multiple Spider-Men and Spider-Women. They always did seem to operate differently which brought a nice flair to their stories. Spider-Man 2099 is one of the most unique of them, it was nice seeing him brought back into continuity. For those whom want the scoop on how he ended up back in the Heroic Age to once again meet up with the original Spider-Man, then read The Superior Spider-Man Volume 4: Necessary Evil for the whole deal. Written by Peter David, this TPB collects Spider-Man 2099 issues 1-5 and Material from Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1.

For the most part these first issues are clearly setting the foundation for Miguels' world with a bit of action added on to keep things moving. Spider-Man 2099 feels very different from Peter Parker which is a good thing, despite him mixing up with people Parker already know and knows very well. One character by the name of Tempest is introduced with a story of a her own and this can go anywhere. Liz Allan ends up playing a bigger role than I originally thought she would, and comes off quite intelligent too when discovering certain things. There's also a villain introduced unique to this Spider-Man. Miguel also mixes it up with the Scorpion whom appears to have recovered from having his jaw punched off by Spider-Otto, as he delivers an interesting encounter here. I really liked this match up with the Scorpion though, because this bout felt so different from his usual battles with the original Spider-Man, and if this fight did anything it helped with some type of development for Miguel, as we see he has other tools at his disposal. This book also helps set the stage for the Spider-Verse event.

This is a fairly good volume with some dark comedy even added there. I love how this Spider-Man thinks once he felt his identity was discovered. However, I don't think he's properly developed though. There are differences between him and Peter that only knowledgeable fans would know. He definitely needed more.

Will Sliney whom draws the first four issues with Rick Leonardi penciling the last one do a fine enough job. The character designs aren't done in an overly cartoonish style shades of Humberto Ramos or a flashy edginess the likes of Ryan Stegman. They have a fine like detail with no abnormal exaggerations. The action is easy enough to follow and the backgrounds don't feel lazily done either. The final volume is quite different and at times feels manga like.

Overall, this is a solid enough volume that will probably rope in several people unfamiliar with this character. Even though I can't consider it anything groundbreaking I did like it. I still recommend it though for anyone interested in Spider-Man like characters. 3.5/5

Pros: Nice artwork and easy to follow story

Cons: Simply just decent and not really anything truly eye grabbing
