Captain Bintang`s Night-In-With-A-DVD movie review
"There was a time..." growls the narrator over the opening scenes "...when the World was plunged into darkness and chaos, a time of witchcraft and sorcery, a time when no one stood against evil..."
Solomon Kane is a hack and slay actioner, and a story of redemption with the message: Sometimes violence is the answer.
The film opens with piratical English soldier, Kane, chopping his way through a Moorish castle on the North African coast...
"Dogs!" hack! slash! "Putrid heathens" etc,etc...
But, an unexpected encounter with The Grim Reaper with the news his soul is damned, sends Kane packing to England to renounce his evil ways and find God.
And so, enter country bumpkin Kane, a pious and tormented soul - a humble man, until an act of unspeakable violence turns him...but, hey, I bet you can guess the rest...
Solomon Kane is a historical swashbuckler with fantasy elements - or maybe a fantasy movie with historical elements. Thankfully it`s not so fantastical its in Lord of The Rings mould and Kane is an interesting character and not a hulking barbarian so typical of Robert E. Howard characters. It`s the story of a good man driven to violence by evil, to rescue a fair maiden. In fact, it has all the kinds of thing you`d expect from a movie like this and it`s not too taxing on the brain. In fact, you could probably come home from a night in the pub and still enjoy this. So just crash back on the sofa and enjoy the fight scenes...
GOOD BITS:
Love the period setting - late medieval England. Wintery countryside, ravens cawing, bodies hanging from gibbets. Solomon Kane`s Devonian accent. The demented priest with a cellar full of demons....
BAD BITS:
Sometimes it`s a little too obvious and cheesy. The video-game style giant monster at the end - was that really necessary?
What was so special about Meredith anyway? Why did the sorceror want her so much? Damned if I know...
