Occult Action in the Old West

What do you get when you combine Mike Mignola characters and the Wild West? You get some groovy action and storytelling.

    The Good

I can't say I'm too familiar with the character of Edward Grey. What's weird is normally I don't like tales from the late 1800s. I was  never really a fan of Wild West stories (except for Jonah Hex). Reading this comic is making me wonder if my tastes are expanding. The combination of John Severin's art with Dave Stewart's colors is something to see. There's almost something elegant about the art and the way Edward Grey is drawn. When he arrives in a town looking for a man, you really get a feel for the mood of the town and how dangerous things could get for him.

Mignola and Arcudi set up the story that leaves you on the edge of your seat. Of course there's a cliffhanger at the end and it's a pretty crazy one. I may not know a lot about the character but I sure do want to know more now.

    The Bad

The only bad thing is that I stupidly have not read the past series with Edward Grey. This is something that needs to be rectified.

    The Verdict

If you've read the past Edward Grey stories, you already know you're in for a treat. Regardless of your familiarity with the character, this is a series you can easily jump into. The art and writing really stand out and gives you a feel for the late 1800s and the Wild West. The use of the occult here isn't crammed on your face and hovers just beyond the edge of the story. This adds even more to the character and story. The issue teases a bigger story that will hook you into coming back for the next one.

Thanks for point this out G-Man, I think this is a book I would like.  I like westerns (Hex, Loveless, even Dark Tower) and I love the occult.  Makes sense I should check it out.

I wonder if its closer to the Vertigo Jonah Hex minis.  Have not read to much of the Wild West stories, but I understand the flavor you are talking about.

It's a good sign about yourself when you get the feeling that your interests are expanding, your sense of judgement becomes more...focused. Mostly when you run one of the biggest Comicbook related websites.
