Artist George Pérez created the original Shim'Tar as a Post Crisis version and she first appeared in the series Wonder Woman #34.
Rather than a single person, Shim'Tar is the title of the interchangeable chief warrior of the Bana-Mighdall Amazons, similar to how the title of Wonder Woman is classified as the chief warrior of the Themyscirian Amazons. The title of Shim'Tar is chosen through the Tournament of the Crown, a rite of combat, but, originally, it was made in order to chose the bearer of the queen's role. The original Shim'tar was a contestant in the Tournament of the Crown. The mantle of Shim'Tar was first bequeathed to this woman who died protecting her homeland, Bana-Mighdall.
Wonder Woman's initial contact with the first Shim'tar occurred when her Lasso of Truth was stolen by The Cheetah and she had to go to Egypt to search for it. There, she found a lost tribe of Amazons in the city of Bana-Mighdall. These Amazons, she discovered, were apparently descendants to her aunt Antiope. A dissident of that tribe named Faruka plotted to become that tribe's queen.
She chose a powerful unnamed Amazon to act as her enforcer. Calling herself Shim'Tar, this warrior had cybernetic implants that not only greatly enhanced her strength, but also provided her with laser capabilities and durability. After killing the desert Amazon tribe's regent queen, Shim'Tar battled Diana at Faruka's request. Fighting all across the city, Shim'Tar was able to gain the upper hand by dosing Diana with a powerful paralytic drug. Before she can finish the job, several Amazons gunned down Faruka for endangering her people. Driven into a frenzy by the loss pf her leader, she then turns on the Bana. At Hermes', Diana took the opportunity to wrap her recently recovered Lasso around her, causing a massive power surge that annihilated Bana-Mighdall and many of it's residents, Shim' Tar seemingly dying among them. In the aftermath, Diana discovered that the Shim'Tar warrior gained the majority of her enormous power by wearing the Golden Girdle of Gaea that, when reunited with its counterpart, the Lasso of Truth, caused the explosion. This first Shim'Tar's true identity remains a mystery to this day.
Circe once put a mind-controlling spell on Queen Hippolyta and dressed her in the armor of the first Shim'Tar. According to Circe's plan, Diana and Shim'Tar II would fight and, eventually, kill each other. The mind-control eventually wore off, allowing Hippolyta to come to her senses. It was because of this event that Hippolyta developed an initial hatred for the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall, as they had aided Circe in her plans.
The Third Shim'Tar
Inspired by the original Shim'Tar, eventually a young amazon named Alika assumed the role of the new Shim'Tar. As opposed to the previous Shim'Tars, the title had become adopted by the Bana-Mighdallian Amazons as the station of "protector" within their tribe.
Akila proved to be an asset to both the Bana tribe as well as to Wonder Woman and her tribe of Amazons. Akila was specially chosen by Queen Hippolyta to act as the Bana tribe's representative. Hippolyta provided Akila the means to attend the University of Oxford in Man's World in order to further her education. During her schooling she had become an engineer and so, she redesigned her armor using a combination of technology and magic.
When the gorilla Queen Abu-Gita and her hordes tried to invade Paradise Island, Akila helped Diana and Artemis defeat their attack. She effectively assisted in gorilla tribe to stop their battle against the Amazons.
Due to civil unrest between the two tribes residing on Themyscira, the Themyscirian Amazons and Amazons of Bana-Mighdall declared war upon each other. During this battle the still young Akila was unable to defend either tribe due to her inexperience and blatant uninterest in becoming a warrior. She was hurt during battle and agreed to hand over the title and armor of "Shim'Tar" to Artemis.
Artemis acted as her tribe's Shim'Tar until Queen Hippolyta abolished the Amazon's Monarchy rule, after which Artemis set her position as Shim'Tar aside to become the Amazon nation's co-ruler beside the Amazon General Philippus. To date, the title of Shim'Tar remains empty and it is not known if shall be again.
Powers and Abilities
As an Amazon, Shim'Tar has superhuman strength, agility, speed, reflexes and endurance, as well as increased longevity. She is a very skilled hand-to-hand fighter, and shows proficiency with a wide variety of weapons.
Shim'Tar has worn different types of body armors in the past. One was a mix of sophisticated and high tech parts with less traditional Amazonian treats. Through jets on her boots she is able to fly, to what distance and height had never been tested. The armor could shoot energy blasts from its gloves. The armor was also able to shoot a version of cobra venom from her gloves as well. Wearing this Shim'Tar is as strong or stronger than Diana.
The latest was a more classical armor with the treats derived from the Bana however was redesigned by Akila to make a more updated armor using a combination of technology and magic.
