Volume 1
He appears on the bridge, shocked when Eva 01 receives damage with Shinji as it’s pilot. He is stunned, with everyone else, when the Third Angel self destructs.
Volume 2
Aoba reappears on the bridge in Volume 2 during the battle with the Fourth Angel. He is the technician to declare the Fourth Angel as dead.
Volume 3
When the Fifth Angel appears, it is Aoba who discovers that the angel is using a particle beam weapon. He is also the person who announces that the angel has penetrated the 17 armour plate of NERV headquarters.
Volume 5
Aoba is seen again on the bridge when the angel appears in orbit. He seems to be responsible for counting down the angel’s descent. Afterwards, during the blackout, Aoba is trying to help get a grasp of the situation and restore power to the base.
Volume 6
Aoba is present at the meeting regarding the destruction of the Nevada Branch in , commenting that the tried to install an S2 Engine that was restored by and . During the fight between a Dummy Plug controlled Eva 01 and the Eva 03 angel, he expresses horror at what the Dummy Plug is capable of.
Volume 7
During the battle with the Ninth Angel, Aoba warns that the angel will soon enter the GeoFront. He continues to provide updates on its progress. After Eva 01 runs out of power, he runs out onto the GeoFront with Maya, Hyuga, Misato and Ritsuko. After the battle he states that the engineers will likely condemn the command centre.
Volume 8
Aoba is involved in the salvage operation to rescue Shinji after he was absorbed by Eva 01.
Volume 9
He is seen on the bridge during the battles against both the Tenth and Eleventh Angels, reading statistics and commenting on the pilots’ statuses.
Volume 10
When Rei causes Eva 00 to self-destruct, he is seen on the bridge watching in stunned silence. He confirms that the angel has been destroyed be her act.
Volume 11
During the final angel attack, Aoba is present on the bridge acting in his usual capacity. After an AT Field is detected, he tells the officers that they are unable to monitor anything. After the defeat of the final angel, he states his belief that NERV will be disbanded. He doesn’t know what will happen to the technicians. When the Magi system is attacked during the invasion of NERV, Aoba identifies the attacking systems as , and the .
Volume 12
He is seen arming himself and pulling out stashes of weapons, musing that the internal security cuts were likely in anticipation of the invasion.
