Well, that was...interesting...
I love Sherlock Holmes. I started reading Conan Doyle's original stories when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade. I got a deerstalker's hat and my mom made me this wonderful cape sort of like what you see Holmes wearing on the cover of this comic so I could be Sherlock Holmes for Halloween one year. So, you could say I am a fan of Sherlock Holmes...maybe even a Sherlockian, but I think thats making me sound obsessive.
So...is this the Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes?
Whenever I read or watch a movie or a tv show staring the World's Greatest Detective (eat your heart out Batman!), I ask this question: is this the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes? Its a lot like comparing Bob Kane's Batman to say...Grant Morrison's Batman. Some could say the original is the best and others could say the newer version is the best. Can never tell...Here, in this comic, we see a greatly different sluth than we see in the books. For starters, this is not set in europe like most of Doyle's stories are; it is set in the United States.
Sherlock Holmes in America
This is weird for me. London will always be the home of Sherlock Holmes for me. No matter what other fictional characters (like Knight or Captain Britain) try to lay claim to the city, it will always be the home of Sherlock Holmes for me. So, the fact that they moved him irritates me. Of course this makes some sense. Previously, in the movies Holmes jumped some decades and fought some Nazis when he was portrayed by Basil Rathbone in the 1943 film "Sherlock Homes and the Secret Weapon", so this isn't new, but it still irritates me.
The writing / Art
The writing is fairly good. At times the writer's portrayal of Holmes has him be as clueless as the police officers, which is just not Holmes. Personally, I think Holmes could have observed his surroundings and could have made a conclusion about who the antagonist/killer was and then set a trap for them instead of admitting he was (to quote the comic) "as clueless as you". The art was pretty good. I don't hold any grudges against this unknown artist.
Conclusion
This is a fairly good comic. It has some alright stories (my favorite was the Final Curtain). If you personally want to read this comic tell me and I'll send you a link the site.
