This was actually a lot better than I thought it'd be
Parodies are hard to do well. Take a look at the Not Another ____ Movie movies, for example. I also didn't read fear itself. So I wasn't sure if I'd like this issue. But I like Wyatt Cenac, so I picked it up.
I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, this issue has almost nothing to do with Fear Itself. As far as I can tell, only the first and last story are parodies of fear itself. That was the first good surprise - this is actually a collection of short (sometimes only one page long) stories that poke fun at the Marvel Universe. Another good surprise - it actually uses Marvel characters. From the cover, I thought it was going to go the Mad Magazine route -nope!
Here's a quick list and what I thought:
LOVED the first story
Wyatt's first story was hilarious!
F4 Reunion story was great!
Second Wyatt story was great!
Marvel Event Flowchart - in which they show a "leaked" document which reveals how Marvel plans all these events they've been having recently - was awesome, but hit a little close to home. It really was the best example of parody/satire in this issue because it's so true it almost stings more than it is funny.
Next Wyatt story was the first to fall flat for me
Dream story was surreal
I Hate Peter Parker was good
Last Wyatt story was good as well
Basically, if you are into Marvel comics, this book is well worth the $3 or $4. I love parodies (my favorite comedy films are Mel Brooks and Monty Python) and I laughed pretty hard while reading this book. (Not in every short story, but in a lot of them) Buy it!
